Do we need yet another sales book?

I have never made it a secret that I think there are too many books on selling which are of little help to sellers. Those written form the point of view: "This is what made me successful and I see no reason, why this should not work for you too" I find the least useful.

SNAP Selling by Jill Konrath, is definitely not of this category. It is a book on sales that is urgently needed. It provides sellers with a set of strategies and tactics enabling them to speed up sales and win more business based on a solid framework. Contrary to many other sales books I have read, SNAP Selling spells out clearly for what type of prospects/customers these strategies and rules should be applied.

In the words of the author, today's customers are frazzled. Time is their most precious commodity. They consider buying as a disruptive act eating into their most precious resource. Even if the status quo is far from optimal; they prefer to stay with it as long as they ever can. They dread the effort and time in it will take to align their organization in agreeing to do something different. They are also fearful about making risky decision that could negatively impact their career.

We should not be mistaken in the hope that these characteristics of customers are of a temporary nature caused by the crisis for which we see signs, that the worst might now be over. The current status is the new normal and the pressure to do more with less will continue.

From the above definition of the customer, we can conclude that the book is about how to sell solutions and services considered a major purchase by the customer in the B2B context. As many sellers still have to learn to see selling from the customer' s point of view it would have been helpful if this had been spelled out clearly somewhere in the text.

Konrath predicts that sellers continuing using their dear and tried techniques such as closing and objection handling will be relegated to the D-Zone. The D-zone is where sellers are dismissed or deleted, their sales are deferred permanently or at least delayed and where prospects disappear. Sellers getting relegated to the D-Zone have two choices, they either blame the stupid customer for their problems and thus endangering their career, or they change their approach to fit better with the needs of frazzled customers.

For those sellers wanting to change their approach to avoid the D-Zone, the four SNAP rules are proposed:
* Making the decision process Simple for the customer
* Become iNvaluable through value brought to the customer relationship
* Be Aligned with the customer's needs at all time
* Assure that the purchase of the solutions/services remains a Priority in the customer's mind

To apply the SNAP rules, sellers must understand what is going on in the customers head. First, one must understand who in the customer organization will make the decision. Then the context in which the decision has to be made must be understood. To capture this knowledge the author proposes a Buyer's matrix. This matrix then is the basis to draw up customer personas which then allow mastering what is called in the book the mind meld. Mind meld can be practically applied by checking of the relevance of a message a seller wants to convey for example in a phone call or a presentation from the customer's point of view.

Sales excellence does not come from knowing why what has to be done how, all presented in the book. Sales excellence comes from doing. To help readers getting to action, there is a companion website where templates for the tools such as the buyer's matrix can be downloaded.

The major part of the book is devoted to help the reader to understand the decision process customers go through to make major purchases. Customers:
1. Allow access (starting with no interest connecting, to end up agreeing to a conversation)
2. Initiate change (after having listen to ideas, they decide that the status quo is unacceptable)
3. Select resources (they start considering their options and end up selecting the best decision)

For each of these phases concrete guidelines are given on what needs to be done and how to adhere to the SNAP rules to help the customer to come to a decision.

To help the customer with decision 1 for example, recommendations are made how to capitalize on trigger events or how to align with the customer through winning value propositions. On the companion website, the reader can find a synopsis for a Value Proposition Generator. Some subject matter experts might wonder about the format suggested for the Value Proposition. It is though totally adequate for the context of phase 1. The possible wondering arises from the fact that people usually use more complex value proposition schemes which would though be more appropriate for phase 3. Avoiding the over used and often misunderstood term might thus have helped to prevent potential debate and confusion.

Decision 2 is often not addressed at all by sellers. Emphasizing the need to demonstrate specific business value for a buyer to decide to leave status quo is to me the most important part of this book. If this concept where widely understood, we would not find studies like those from CSO Insights indication a high percentage of forecast opportunities ending up with what the sellers call a 'no decision', because the customer, despite initial interest, was finally not buying from anybody. Another symptom for ignoring this phase is the asking of premature qualification questions such as "do you have budget"; a sure way to be relegated to the D-zone, due to lack of alignment.

For phase 3, there are strategies such as how to be aligned with the customer by balancing the Value-Risk Equation and how to become iNvaluable, by collaborating with hot prospects as if they where already a customer.

Evidently phase 3 is the phase of presentations and proposals. As there is a lot of literature already available on these subjects, the author just highlights how the SNAP rules apply to these items.

I think it is important that we are reminded that these 3 phases should not be mistaken for a linear process. Sellers cannot always assume to be able to capture the prospect's attention at a yet untroubled stage.( phase 1) Sellers having done a good job in particular in phase 2 might also find that the prospect has become sufficiently comfortable with the relation to forgo phase 3. It is therefore more crucial to exactly understand in what phase the customer is and to use the strategies appropriate for the respective phase. Failing to do so is another sure way to get relegated to the D-Zone.

Jill Konrath also gives the reader practical advice on how to implement the strategies. To do so, she not only gives examples from her own experience but also through selected quotes from practitioners and consultants. I particularly like the fact, that not all these examples are success stories. She does not shy away from also talking about failures and what lessons can be learned from them. This makes the book all that more credible to me.

For me it is now easy to answer the often recurring question about what sales book I would recommend, if I only could choose one for somebody new to sales or somebody wanting to assure to stay relevant in sales: SNAP Selling by Jill Konrath.

"How To Sell" Guide for Large Accounts in a Frenetic Environment...4.5*

The timing of this book couldn't be better. Yes, our customers are "crazy-busy" and are "frazzled" and are "not waiting for our calls" and are "deluged with information and choices." Yes, it does take a different selling approach today then what was effective in a less frenetic environment. Kornath explains in considerable detail how today's customer thinks and acts and she outlines the selling process to capture this customer. Her process is based on SNAP, an acronym for "SIMPLE" (eliminate complexity and effort for your client in their decision making process), "iNvaluable" (the value you personally bring to the relationship in world which lacks differentiation and value), "ALIGNED" (staying relevant to your customer at all times - they don't have time for anything else) and "PRIORITY (in an ever-changing business environment, you can't afford to have your prospect deem your services non-urgent). She also details a 3 step Decision-making process for each client from 1st Decision (Allow Access) to 2nd Decision (Initiate Change) to 3rd Decision (Select Resources). My assessment of the book is summarized as follows:

1) The book is well written in a conversational voice. It is well organized, succinct and supported with solid examples.

2) Very much appreciated that strategies didn't include buyer manipulation, tricks, gimmicks, jams or pitches. She demonstrates how to differentiate yourself and your product in a crowded market.

3) Book places you squarely in the mind of the buyer and the buyer's perspective. Kornath outlines a step by step process to improve your closing ratio and shorten selling cycle time.

4) I didn't find this book to be a page turner. It's not a book that can be powered through in a day or two - it's meant to be read, digested and then back to the plow horse. It is more of a "How To" Sell book than an engaging story telling experience. That being said, this will be a reference book that will reside firmly on my shelf.

5) The book is written for the reader interested in B2B sales at/to larger companies & larger accounts - with more complex sales - providing multiple selling opportunities - with longer cycle sales - as opposed to selling to individuals with shorter cycle decision times (although many of the concepts apply).

6) Book is more applicable for salespeople at larger established companies vs those at smaller companies or start-ups

A few of my favorite excerpts:

"CSO Insights shows that 53% of sales organizations report that less than half of their first meetings resulted in a second meeting...What was the biggest difference between companies that did well versus those that struggled? Easy access to insights and knowledge about their prospects' company, marketplace, competitor and even decision makers...in short, you must prepare for these initial meetings...winging it doesn't work. Until you understand this in your bones, you'll have a tough time in sales."

"Enrolling is not about forcing, cajoling, tricking, bargaining, pressuring or guilt tripping someone into doing things your way...enrollment is the art and practice of generating a spark of possibility for others to share...people who are 'enrolled' want to get involved. They believe it's worth it, that a positive result - perhaps one they'd never even thought of before - is possible."

"Deliver a killer presentation that tells the story of how their lives will be better when they use your solution...back it up with stats and similar client examples. Make sure you eliminate the unnecessary; get rid of bullets and get rid of words. Use images to relay your ideas....that's what it takes to engage people and get their conceptual buy-in. Get them excited. Remove the drudge and toil factors. When you can do that, they care - and you really need that if you're going to do business with their organization."

SNAP Selling your way into your next job

Contrary to what most people think, companies ARE still hiring today! As an executive search firm, we are working on 37 open positions as this review is being posted.

Which is why, if you are a job hunter, you need Jill Konrath's "Snap Selling" in your arsenal of resources.

Selling in 2011 is tougher than ever and to be successful, sales professionals must know (or learn!) "how to sell to today's crazy, busy, frazzled customers." So how does this relate to the job hunt? As a job seeker, one is, in every sense of the word, a salesperson. Yes, even if you are an engineer, a chemist, an accountant or an IT professional, if you are interested in pursuing a new career opportunity, you must become a sales professional. Thus, wherever you read "sales professional" in the next few paragraphs, substitute the phrase "job seeker."

Today the ONLY sales professionals (and job hunters) who break through the clutter and get the attention of a decision-maker are the ones who are completely focused on the customer's business and the positive impact that they can have on it. Failure to take this approach, Konrath illustrates, almost always results in the sales person (job hunter) being "zapped from their in-box, tossed into the trash can or deleted from their voice mail."

How, then, do you get the attention of a busy, frazzled, harried decision-maker? You must construct and implement what Konrath refers to as a SNAP message:

* Simple
* iNvaluable
* Aligned
* a Priority

In regard to job hunting, what is significant to note here is that this approach could NEVER be effectively implemented in a response to an online or "advertised" job posting! On the other hand, it is TAILOR-MADE to use for tapping into the "hidden job market"!

Let's take a closer look at the elements of "SNAP Selling" as they relate to job hunting:

Keep it Simple - In communicating with a potential hiring manager, you must ensure SIMPLICITY in EVERYTHING you do. (Is your résumé brief and easy to read? Are you able to easily be contacted? Can a hiring manager quickly and easily comprehend the message you are delivering and quickly assess the impact it can have on the hiring company?)

iNvaluable - To get hired, you must be bringing fresh ideas. You have to stand out by being a person the company seemingly can't live without!

Aligned - Frazzled hiring managers must see an IMMEDIATE connection between what you do and what they are trying to achieve. What research have you done to understand what it is the company is trying to do and achieve and what can you do to help them do that?

Priority - Frazzled decision-makers only work on high priority items. You must make hiring you one of their TOP priorities. This concept is especially true as you implement your "touch plan" (See "`Headhunter' Hiring Secrets" for full details on this concept.)

If you don't deliver a SNAP message, Jill clearly points out, you WILL be hit decisively with the "delete key"!

Job hunting is tougher than ever before. Hiring managers are under extreme pressure to do more with less and to not make any hiring mistakes.

That period in African history is captured with haunting intimacy in this artful page-turner from Nigerian novelist Adichie (Purple Hibiscus). Adichie tells her profoundly gripping story primarily through the eyes and lives of Ugwu, a 13-year-old peasant houseboy who survives conscription into the raggedy Biafran army, and twin sisters Olanna and Kainene, who are from a wealthy and well-connected family. Tumultuous politics power the plot, and several sections are harrowing, particularly passages depicting the savage butchering of Olanna and Kainene's relatives. But this dramatic, intelligent epic has its lush and sultry side as well: rebellious Olanna is the mistress of Odenigbo, a university professor brimming with anticolonial zeal; business-minded Kainene takes as her lover fair-haired, blue-eyed Richard, a British expatriate come to Nigeria to write a book about Igbo-Ukwu art—and whose relationship with Kainene nearly ruptures when he spends one drunken night with Olanna. This is a transcendent novel of many descriptive triumphs, most notably its depiction of the impact of war's brutalities on peasants and intellectuals alike. Based loosely on political events in nineteen-sixties Nigeria, this novel focusses on two wealthy Igbo sisters, Olanna and Kainene, who drift apart as the newly independent nation struggles to remain unified. Olanna falls for an imperious academic whose political convictions mask his personal weaknesses; meanwhile, Kainene becomes involved with a shy, studious British expat. After a series of massacres targeting the Igbo people, the carefully genteel world of the two couples disintegrates. Adichie indicts the outside world for its indifference and probes the arrogance and ignorance that perpetuated the conflict. Yet this is no polemic. The characters and landscape are vividly painted, and details are often used to heartbreaking effect: soldiers, waiting to be armed, clutch sticks carved into the shape of rifles; an Igbo mother, in flight from a massacre, carries her daughter's severed head, the hair lovingly braided.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, author of Purple Hibiscus (2003), was born in Nigeria in 1977 into a well-educated Igbo family. Drawing on her family's experience and Nigeria's history a decade before her birth, Adichie has written an ambitious, astonishing novel that succeeds on all levels. In her exploration of ethnic, religious, and class prejudices and genocide, Adichie focuses on the personal experiences of a few memorable individuals experiencing the drama of the conflict and the new nation. Her manipulation of point of view and time, from the years before and during the war, adds depth and perspective to her timely novel as secessionist tensions in the former Biafra persist.

Heartbreaking portrait of hope in the face of hopelessness

I went into this novel with zero expectations or even knowledge of the subject matter. I discovered Adichie through her snippet in Beyonce's "****Flawless", and eventually found a couple of her TED talks and thought that her ideas on storytelling and the importance of perspective were unique in a way that I never considered.

"Half of a Yellow Sun" will challenge you. It will make you question what love means, how to survive through both spirit and body. It emphasizes redemption, the unbreakable bonds of family, of sisterhood. But most importantly it will shatter your heart into a million reflective shards that force you to examine your own life. It will teach you the history of Biafra, a nation of people who would not go quietly into that night even as they were being relentlessly starved and bombed. It will make you fall in love with its characters who are all too real, with lives that are too fully fleshed out.

Read this, let it become a part of you...

This is an amazing novel explaining life in Nigeria during the civil war when the nation broke into two parts, one being Biafra. It contrasts the views of those who favored independence vs those who wanted the nation to stay as it was, and the horrific role the U.S. and Britain played in this conflict. It also contrasts the lives of people living in the bush with those living cities, and how both suffered terribly. Twin sisters are at the center of the novel, and they represent the nation torn asunder as their lives lead them in different directions, further apart yet always connected. They, and their country, are each half of a yellow sun.

I read Americanah first , now i see why...

The reviews for Americanah were so harsh (even though I still love Americanah). This book is a classic on so many levels. It should be read in all freshmen level literature or African studies classes. This book is eye opening to the struggle Nigeria faced soon after its independence from the United Kingdom in the late 1960's. The richness of the character development throughout the novel made me personally attached to each character. A beautiful fictional depiction based on historical accounts and research , this is a must read!!!!!!

Gerrie Ter Haar is professor of religion and development at the International Institute for Social Studies (IS) in The Hague, part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. About the Author

Suman Fernando is Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at London Metropolitan University, UK. Before that he was Senior Lecturer at the European Centre for Migration and Social Care at the University of Kent, UK, and consultant psychiatrist in the National Health Service for over twenty years. He is active in non-governmental organizations in UK and abroad, as well as being consultant to capacity development programmes in Sri Lanka. He has written and lectured widely on mental health development. In 2011 he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for Culture, Race and Mental Health by the University of Toronto, Canada.

This book is a game changer. Both David and his wife Amanda have written amazing books. Her's is called Motivated to Love. Both of these books have drastically changed the course of my life. I was going to file for divorce two days before I read this book. Having the knowledge of this book totally changed my mind and opened up my eyes to what was really going on with my husband. After reading David's book, I read Amanda's immediately. I highly recommend both books. I can honestly say that I would not been married today if it were not for this book and their ministry. The book is an honest tell-all. I highly recommend this book. If you are reading this review, then there is part of you that wants to save your marriage. Please buy the book and read it.

I have both David's and his wife Amanda's books. Two different ways of approaching dealing with a reluctant spouse. David's book was so helpful because it really helped me see that the issue was not about me. I have come to understand my husbands pain, even if he does not. I know how to pray for him and I know how to be strategic in dealing with him. It isn't about being phony either. With Amanda's book you transform your mind/spirit to be more like Christ. With David's book you learn how to demonstrate that transformation in a non-threatening way to your spouse. The both of them have been a true blessing. This couple proves that God works it all together for our good. The trials they went through have saved thousands of people from giving up on God's plan. May God continue to bless you both, David and Amanda

When dealing with the topic of troubled marriages and what to do when you simply don't know what to do, it is hard to find information that speaks directly to your heart and situation. This book does that and more. It helps you to be able to take a look past the hurt and pain to see the heart of the reluctant spouse. It is written is a clear and concise way that just answers the questions that all standing spouses have. This book helped me to know more about my spouse and want to know even more about the things that are causing him pain. I would highly recommend this book as well as his wife's book "Motivated to Love". Together these two books will give you strength and strategies to help yourself, your spouse and your marriage.

Diving into the world around ELE has been a truly exciting experience for us as authors. It isn't often that you get to create futuristic worlds or test the waters by writing interesting super hero abilities. Never the less, abilities that are thrust into the hands of unsuspecting teenagers. As if coming of age isn't enough for them to deal with already, throw in new freaky powers, and you got yourself a nice hot mess that makes for an interesting read. 
The idea for Project ELE was a long time coming for us. When we were writing Night Marchers (our first journey into writer-hood) we kept playing with the idea for Project ELE. So when we finished Redemption, the last book (possibly not the final book) in the Night Marchers series, we knew that we had to give ELE the attention it deserved. 
This by far has been our favorite series to write. The story has practically told itself and little time passes us by when we aren't thinking about Willow Mosby and all that Project ELE has thrown at her. We published Project ELE in August of 2012 and since then, have gone on to release Finding ELE and Exposing ELE in less than six months. To top that off, we hope to release the fourth book in this series by the end of January 2013. None of our previous books were written so quickly and this is all due to the fact that there is so much of a story to be told in The ELE Series. So many conspiracies, heart breaks, love, crazy super human abilities, villains you love to hate and more that still needs to be written for our awesome fans. We want to thank everyone who has taken the time to read our books and experience the magical worlds that surrounds them, with us. Rebecca Gober and Courtney Nuckels are down home country girls powered by chocolate and other random late night cravings. Coined in southern twang, they bring new meaning to the word y'all. BFI's since the 6th grade, with a knack for getting into sticky situations, has resulted in countless ideas to write about for years to come. 
Rebecca and Courtney co-authored their first book, a young adult paranormal romance: Night Marchers in October 2011. They released their second book in The Night Marchers Series:Redemption, in February 2012. Since then they have gone on to write a new young adult apocalyptic series called The ELE Series. Currently there are three books published in The ELE Series: Project ELE, Finding ELE and Exposing ELE. They are in the process of writing the fourth book in the series at this time. 
When not writing, Rebecca and Courtney spend time in their Texas homes with their families and their oversized dogs who still think they are puppies.

Nice Continuation of the Series

To start off, you need to read the first book of the series before you read this one: Project ELE (ELE Series #1) (The ELE Series)

I picked up the first book in the series as a freebie and enjoyed it so much I immediately bought book 2 directly on my Kindle when I finished book 1. This series is a fast-read sci-fi tale primarily aimed at the young adult / older children market but is also good for adults. Without having a spoiler, rather than aliens you have an apocalyptic-type scenario with a disease, sequestration while a radical attempt to eradicate the disease takes place, followed up by a group of kids who get into mischief with far-reaching implications. The authors do a good job of continuing the action in the story from the first chapter and, consistent with book 1 of the series leave you hanging at the end with a "to be continued moment." Reading this book will have you in several "what if moments" if you had the same capabilities of the survivors on the outside.

Consistent with book one of the series, parents can recommend this for their kids' Kindles as well as their own - no profanity, sex, or drugs, jut good story and tale. It's unusual to find a book you can enjoy with your kids and both be entertained, and I have shared this with my junior high daughter for her to read.

I bought this for $2.99 for the Kindle version - you will certainly get more than $2.99 worth of entertainment out of this one. I'm ready for book 3!

my mind was reaped and sucked dry

I don't know how this book could become so bad so quickly. I loved and 5 starred the first book. This book was just poorly done.

There are going to be SPOILERS, so stop here if you don't want to read them.

Somehow, Alice Mosby, Willow's mother, is the leader of the survivors. I didn't know that homemaking skills would lead to this, but okay. Mom has Willow appear before the group. You could see one of the guys, Chris, was angry. So Willow makes him do the chicken dance against his will. She was just showing off all those powers.

Mom assigns a young hot guy, Tony, to train Willow. Of course after two days, Tony is licking her, but she loves Alec. Tony tries to teach Willow to shoot, but she keeps accidentally pointing a loaded gun at him. And they use knife throwing as a defense. Knife throwing is not an easy skill to learn, unless you are Rambo. This was so idiotic, knife throwing. Willow can't aim and hit a target with a gun. Knife throwing is definitely out.

So Willow whines to mommy and is allowed to go on a scouting expedition to find her friends. She gets bored and turns herself invisible, funny. No one tells her mom that she put the group at risk because she was bored.

She throws a jealous hissy fit because a 14 year old, who obviously has questionable morals and must have daddy issues, is flirting with Tony. As I read this I thought, wow, this book has really gotten bad, and this is so sad that the book has devolved to this. But Willow doesn't want Tony, she loves Alec. Teenage angst for no reason is really going to the bottom of the barrel.

Several times it was explained that Willow was strong. She has powers, but she isn't strong. She is immature, petulant and whiny.

Her mom tells her to leave and take her brother and protect him, so she abandons him at the first opportunity. She wanted to help her mom fight, and Willow does what she wants. Ugh, can someone put her out of my misery.

At 20%, I easily figured out what new power Willow would gain. It was foreshadowed to death.

Please, please, please get an editor, who will put in all those missing commas, and holy buckets, buy a dictionary. A heal is not on a shoe. That would be a heel. A guiney pig is spelled guinea pig. You don't feel indifferent or blaze. This would be blase'.

This book is filled with immaturity, whining and teenage angst.

ABSOLUTELY A FIVE STAR READ!!!

A five star read!! Hands down!!

Once finishing Project ELE, I couldn't just sit back and try something else. I just HAD to know what happened to Willow and her crew.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Finding ELE picked up right where Project ELE left us.

I am totally intrigued with the plethora of abilities that surface in this sequel. The link to eye color just blows my mind. And Willow having as many as she does. Without giving anything away - you will be blown away with what's in store for Willow.

I have to say, Alice quickly became one of my most favorite characters. Her determination not only as a leader of her people, but also as a mother was amazing! I do have to say that you could totally tell that being on the outside fighting for months made her a bit hard. I can't imagine not wanting to spend every waking moment with my child after being reunited with them after 4 months. Not knowing what ALL she experienced in the time that she was away from Willow and her husband...I guess we really can't be too hard on her coolness at times.

On to Mr. Tony. BOY OH BOY!!! Do these ladies know how to write oh so cute and lovable guys or what?!?! I loved seeing how there was definitely some "tension" between him and Willow. And how, being the teenage girl that she is, Willow is really torn throughout the story with her feelings.

I have to take a minute to comment just a little on Connor. Oh my word, I think he's a riot. Super cheesy and fun...and I love that he dotes on Claire, yet still is able to be a smart ass. He's one of my most favorite characters.

I'm also quite impressed with the intensity of the relationship between Alec and Willow. I don't know that I have ever seen someone as completely and totally dedicated to another person as Alec is to Willow. At least not at the age that they are at. I have to keep reminding myself that they are only 16 and 17. But I guess when you're faced with such an uncertain future as these kids have, you grow up fast.

This book was almost impossible for me to put down!! And again with the cliffhangers. I'm anxious for the third installment!! That oh so horrible Zack...I know he's going to play a huge role in book three!!

Again - a five star read!! Awesomesauce!!! Read it, loved it, and reviewed!!
