The second Chapter is concerned with deliberation on the way to Siva-hood via the pathless path. Its pathlessness lies in only the initial step suggested by the teacher with the rest of it to follow automatically. It is the kriya yoga which does not require any path to traverse along and is the path of pure consciousness where any action serves as the means of knowledge. The third Chapter deals with Sambhavopaya. The objects get reflected clearly in a clean mirror so does the world becomes reflected in the consciousness provided it has become one with Siva. The force of consciousness is considered as inseparably connected with Siva. The relationship of inseparability between Siva and Sakti produces delight which is the cause of appearance of the world.

A high quality English translation

The translators of this book have done an excellent job in the production of this English translation of the Tantraloka. I found the quality of the language in the book to be of a very high standard. The translators/authors provided a very eloquent introduction that places the Tantraloka within the wider context of the collective wisdom of mankind. In particular, the introduction points out that the school to which Abhinavagupta belonged shares its lineage with the school to which Yogananda (the author of Autobiography of a Yogi) belonged. The introduction also points out the similarities between Sri Aurobindo and Abhinavagupta’s conception of the Absolute. I learnt a lot from reading this book, and I found the work to be a comprehensive presentation of Kashmir Shaivism. I would classify this work as more of a religious text than as a text on spiritual philosophy. The truth of reality has been expressed in the world’s various spiritual traditions. This same truth has also been expressed within the Tantraloka. I am rating the book as five stars because the language of the translation is of a high standard and also because the work provides a comprehensive perspective of Kashmir Shaivism’s Tantra.

It is clear Gaiman has a great interest in the subject and he put a lot ...

I bought this book right when it released at midnight and being hard to put down, I read it completely through the night. It was a fairly quick read but very enjoyable. As I recently read my first novel by Gaiman, I was interested in his writing style and intrigued to hear he would be retelling Norse Mythology.

Coming into the book, I only knew the basics of Norse Mythology so I was excited to learn more about it. It is clear Gaiman has a great interest in the subject and he put a lot of care into it. These are stories that have been told over and over again and this is another retelling to pass through the countless generations these stories have survived.

He retells the stories as chronologically as you can, and keeps the story flowing as it jumps around each chapter telling a new story and each story just as interesting as the last. The stories he chose were all fascinating, there wasn't a single one that was boring.

If you want to find out more about Norse Mythology this is definitely a fantastic read and a good place to start.

Have you ever read the Prose Edda or the Poetic Edda? Painful. Gaiman's Norse Mythology is a joy.

Some complain that when compared to Gaiman's other works, Norse Mythology falls a bit flat. The goal of this project was not to tell new stories, but to breath new life into the old stories. Gaiman stays true to the source materials and presents the stories of Thor and Odin and Loki and all of the Norse gods in a language that feels fresh and engaging. I've worked my way through the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda and they are anything but an easy read. The prose of a millennia past is something of a hot mess. Gaiman has done all of the painful research for us and given us the old stories gift-wrapped in tight, modern language and a clarity and singular narrative that old Snorri Sturluson was incapable of providing. If you want new and exciting stories about Thor and the gang, pick up a Marvel Comic book or Rick Riodan's Magus Chase series. But if you have a genuine academic interest in the old Norse stories, you'll learn more from spending a day with Gaiman's Norse mythology than you will learn from spending a year sifting through the Prose and Poetic Edda and it will be a hell of a lot more fun.

A fairly crushing disappointment

If you're looking for Gaiman's trademark charm, you'd be far better off revisiting Odd and the Frost Giants.

If you're looking for an excellent collection of the Norse myths for adults, you'd be better off reading almost any alternative. At times, one may as well be reading Marvel's Thor comics.

Let's be blunt: Gaiman is not a scholar in this area. He isn't translating these from Old Norse or Gutnish. He's summarizing what he read in superior volumes by people like Kevin Crossley-Holland, E.O.G. Turville-Petre and H.R. Ellis Davidson. And people familiar with certain English translations will likely be shocked at the number of phrases lifted directly from them. I wasn't really prepared for this to diminished Gaiman in my eyes, but it has. I keep reminding myself that this was a labor of love and a great opportunity to introduce his huge audience to these myths, but... Honestly, it leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

So what we have here is a perfectly serviceable way to introduce children to Norse mythology. It's the kind of book you can read to them at bedtime--bowdlerizing where appropriate--then give to them a few years later to read on their own. I strongly suspect, in fact, that this is exactly what Gaiman was going for. If it was, the work has been a success.

However, even for that, I can't really say that I would recommend this. The D’Aulaires’ Book of Norse Myths is a far better choice.

Exemplary Radar Textbook

This book is intended to introduce the reader to the fundamentals of Radar signal processing. This book remains my favorite for four reasons:
1) It covers nearly all aspects of Radar signal processing
2) It is not as superficial as similar textbooks in Radar, but
3) It is not highly mathematical or too specialized
4) The book is application oriented and very useful for graduate students, researchers and practitioners.

Zondervan Professor of Historical Theology Emeritus and senior fellow of the Junius Institute for Digital Reformation Research at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. An Excellent Resource

In moving into a study of the doctrine of God, I bought this as a pair to go with reading through James Dolezal's "God Without Parts." This book certainly helps you work through other reading with finding definitions or longer explanations, but it also excels on its own. If you have an idea of a couple words that begin a study in a particular topic (such as the doctrine of God), then starting there, you can go from reference to reference finding all of the vocabulary in a field with very well thought out definitions/explanations. This is an excellent resource for any theological student.

Very Helpful Tool!

This is one of the most helpful tools in my library. Muller defines key Latin theological terms that you will read in key importantant works of dogmatics. He doesn't just give the simply definition, but also writes about its historical significance in the development in the history of doctrine. At the end of entry Muller gives significant cross-references of other Latin terms. This work opens up the rich history of thought in the church and is easily understood. This is a great tool for any student of theology, layman or pastor. You don't need to know Latin to profit by this book. I highly recommend this book!

Update.

I just purchased the Kindle version of this book. While the content of the book and the Kindle version is the same as the hardbound, it's functionality is very poor indeed. Using it on my iPhone, there is no table of contents in order to look up a word. There is an adequate search engine, but it gives you every occurrence of the word without being able to distinguish a major article from simply a usage inside of a larger paragraph.

Another flaw is that the Kindle version is not hyper link. At the end of many words and trees, Mueller has given additional Latin words to look up that are found in his text. It would be most useful to be able to just click on those words and go to their entry to read more broadly in the text. Amazon charges over $17 for Kindle version. IMHO, the Kindle version is worth about $.99. By the hardcopy forget the electronic version until there is some significant updating.

Warning on Kindle Edition of the Dictionary

The Kindle edition of the Dictionary is not searchable (and the only index is based on English & has no page numbers) making it very difficult to use. A searchable dictionary is great, as the reader can zip straight to the desired entry but, without a search capability or even an index, the only way to find an entry is the old-fashioned way - by iteratively flipping pages in the guessed-at location of the desired entry; given that each Kindle page flip takes 6 to 8 thumb strokes, this is a very cumbersome process. For $5 more you could buy the paperback which, although you probably won't carry it with you on the road, would be much more usable.

Note: Within an hour of bringing this to Amazon's attention (on a Saturday, no less), they had refunded my purchase priced and promised to look into this design flaw (my term) and to let me know if it gets fixed.

A man scrutinizes what it means to live and love during a cross-country search for his missing wife in a prickly, penetrating novel by the author of I Am Not Jackson Pollock. After stopping for gas on his way to his mother-in-law's house, the narrator, Jack, emerges from a convenience store to find that his car and his wife, Anne, are nowhere to be found. After making his way back home, Jack discovers a U.S. map marked with an apparent route; imagining that this will lead him to his wife, he buys another car and sets off. Haskell twists the essential mystery—what happened to Anne?—into a meticulous, probing investigation of one man's desires, fears and coping mechanisms, a tactic that somewhat slows the narrative but results in existential chewiness. As Jack makes his way to Kentucky, Colorado, California, he encounters odd but sympathetic strangers, many of whom are likewise journeying, most of whom aid him and some of whom seem like reflections of himself. His peregrinations are linked to the seven deadly sins, and he encounters a strange cast of characters until he arrives, brokenhearted and broke, on the beaches of San Diego. What he discovers along the way is that memory is often selective and revelatory, that strangers are not always kind (but they often are), and that life-changing experiences (good and bad) can be just around the corner. (3.5) "As long as I had my need I was able to move forward."

This strange novel requires a certain mindset, a willingness to follow the protagonist through a series of actions that make no sense in an ordinary context. But that is the point. This man is engaged in an effort to control his environment and limit his reactions to the world around him. When he walks outside after buying snacks in a gas station-convenience store, his wife, Anne, is missing, along with their car. His reaction to this event is to wait at the gas station for her to return. When she doesn't, he walks from New Jersey back to Brooklyn, abandoning their trip to Anne's mother in Nyack, New York without even calling his mother-in-law to tell her what has happened. He doesn't call the police or act as if anything is amiss, simply returns home and goes to bed. He continues in this disjointed manner with occasional fits of rage, generally carefully monitoring himself. Within a couple of days, he buys a used car and begins a journey to recover his lost wife, using a map she has circled in strategic places. Although he has difficulty connecting to those around him, he travels across the country, the author beautifully describing people and places with a sense of immediacy and a fine talent for detail.

The narrative abstract becomes meditation in American Purgatorio, and an exploration of the seven deadly sins, difficult territory to traverse, requiring the reader to trust where the writer is taking him. Fantasy must be tempered with fact, enough to pin the character to earth while his mind drifts elsewhere in pursuit of a loved one. Clinging to the details of each place he inhabits, the protagonist is barely anchored, yet he manages to tap into reality often enough to maintain a sense of direction, his goal inexorably closer with each place he visits. Not quite a mystery in this mystery, the novel is as well a remarkable travelogue of terrain and the human spirit, wherein one man's deception is another man's heart break, a memorable journey toward self-realization and the nature of the world as we perceive it. I enjoyed this book, but its not for everyone....

From page one I was hooked on this fast-paced, interesting debut novel about a happliy married man who goes into a gas station to get a snack and comes out to find his wife and car missing. The book is written in rather simple prose, which makes for an extremely fast read, however, there is a lot of depth and meaning underlying the simplicity of the words and sentences. So despite reading quickly, you're left pondering how John Haskell was able to so precisely capture raw human emotion, while using such deadpan prose. He has a unique writing style, but one which is extremely admirable, as he so wonderfully taps into how the protagnoist must have felt at each stage of his "search" for his wife, while experiencing each of the seven deadly sins (named in Latin for each part of the book).

I really enjoyed this novel, but don't think its for everyone, so I have a hard time recommending so highly in this review. If you're looking for something different, very well-written, and which captures the complexity of human emotion during a difficult time, this book will likely interest you. If you're on-the-fence, I recommend reading the first chapter before purchasing it, to get an idea about the style in which it is written.
I would likely read another novel by this author, as I believe he is very gifted, and provides interesting insight into the human condition.

Haunted and Haunting

I stayed up too late finishing American Purgatorio, then woke up too early -- before the alarm -- rethinking what I had read. At daylight I was back in the book, checking key passages. An ending that at midnight made me groan aloud in sadness, was found at dawn to deliver an odd redemption.

Jack -- a name the protagonist wears loosely -- is, for good reason, a man apart. He lives in his head. Like a transcontinental drive in the slow lane in a dying car, Jack's narrative of his crossing doesn't whip past. That's the book's challenge, but also its pleasure. At that pace you don't miss the sights, both real and mirage.

Outstanding Work on a Critically Important Topic

This is one of the best books I've read in years. Anyone who has not yet experienced "no-mind" (alertness without thinking) is not living well. Thinking or reading about it prepares one to open up to being. Reading this book and digesting its contents slowly is excellent preparation for living more wisely.

True quality

Although at first look this book may seem overwhelming with lots of mathematical interpretations of quality, however, if you give the book a chance you will realize this book is in fact very basic and extremely easy to follow. Statistics may be intimidating to a person of any profession (engineer, general business or even managers) but the book really takes you from step one and gives a broad understanding of quality. The author of this book tries to offer the mathematical tools to people to improve their understanding of quality. The book also does a fabulous job of talking you through the history of quality(the gurus of quality and their systems) to the new quality processes, such as ISO and Six Sigma. Once I completed this book I understand the reasoning for having the mathematics as such a large part. How can one analyze quality without a statistical background? This book not only breaks things down very simply for a person but also gives a full understanding as to why each topic covered is essential to learning proper quality management. I truly hope to pursue a career in quality after reading this textbook. It takes very difficult topics to grasp (which are essential to todays business world) and makes the information understandable and accessible to a beginner as well as a great refresher.

This is a great book. The text is surprisingly easy to read. The information in the book is presented in a manner that gives a great foundation for quality management without overwhelming the reader. The graphs are clear and actually help in understanding the content unlike other textbooks. Don't let the title fool you, the book isn't just for engineers. Any industry/business that is looking to benefit from a better understanding of quality should put this book on the short list for educational texts.
