Excellent OS X Programming book that covers Swift 2.0 w/ Xcode 7

I really like this book and it's clear explanations. It's a good book for someone with limited programming knowledge looking to take that first step into writing Swift applications for OS X platforms. It progresses nicely, and before you know it, you'll have created your first Swift app on OS X. I am about half way through it and find each chapter easy to read, digest information, then go back and read again as I practice the material on my Mac. I would recommend this book to any beginner to intermediate programmer looking to jump into Swift application development.

This is a true gem of a programming book!

I think this is one of the best programming books I have come across in a long time! It's truly enlightening. This doesn't just teach you how to program using Swift, this book lays an amazing foundation for an aspiring developer...from starting out with wonderful and lucid explanations of object-orientation to explaining design patterns(MVC). Thank you again Wallace for such a great book! This book made me feel like I wasn't just mentally slogging through it and gave me a bunch of "ah ha!" moments that I've been searching for using other books and resources. KUDOS! If you're a beginner looking to start with Apple development or just looking for a good place to learn to program(Granted you have access to an Apple computer) then start with this book!

Without a doubt the best programming book I've read to date, and I read a lot. Thanks to the author for writing this book specifically for programming the Mac. There are very few. The book is clear, accurate, explains things very clearly without losing sight of the context in which the programmers then apply the concepts they are learning. The approach of the book is comprehensive and deals with all matters with an unprecedented clarity.

Another Solid Book in a Very Good Series

This really should be 4.5 stars.....
This is the Fifth in the series.... I have been reading them in the correct chronological order. With this series, that is the only way. There are too many events and people to start in the middle. Too many references to events in the past.
This is a good story. The alien hordes have a new leader. He has also come through the tunnel of light. His home world appears to be around 100 years ahead of earth of 1865. He talks about nuclear weapons and jets. It will be interesting to see how this character develops the hordes.
At one point, the author indicates that the total population of the humans on the planet outnumber the hordes by 10 to 1. That is an interesting fact.
Two new civilizations are introduced. The Zulus and the Chin. The Chin are currently enslaved by the Bantag horde.
This book is mostly about the life of imprisonment that a "pet" of the horde must endure. Towards the end, the slaves revolt and few escape. The last third of the book is devoted to the escape of this small band. Several minor clashes and one large one. A great description of a locomotive chase, similar to the one that occurred during the Civil War with Andrew's Raiders.

From a New Angle.

OK, so, I knew Sgt. Major Hans Schuder wasn't dead when I wrote the review for "Fateful Lightning." But I didn't know it when I read the book so, hoping that you will read these books in chronological order, I think my review kept the spirit of the novel by not revealing everything. This one is absolutely different. "Battle Hymn" is a vision of the Gulag on an alien world. Whereas "Fateful Lightning" gave us the terrible sacrifice of the Cartha, "Battle Hymn" shows us the enslavement of the Chinese, and others, with whom Schuder is now living. Major new character is Ha'ark, the Redeemer and, very important as well, a Zulu warrior friend of Hans. There will be a bit of confusion with come names. As in ther past, with Vuka's brother, in this book a companion of Ha'ark is named Jamul, but in the future will be referred to as Jurak. I do not know the reason for this. It may be an oversight, or it may be that these new commers have chosen to make their names more palatable to the natives. Still, all books have errors. The soul of this series is its conflict, big as a planet and enduring as the machines that transported the Yankees to a New World of War. Most of the book concentrates on the efforts by Hans and his confederates in escaping, the help they get from the Republic, the problems that the traitor Hinsen creates, and the menace that Ha'ark, with his modern, futuristic vision of warfare, means for the survival of humans on Valdenia. Suspenseful, filled with the heroics and folly of war that Forstchen has turned into a trade mark, "Battle Hymn" also introduces the tank into the series.

Love it! But why no eBook!!!!

This is in my top 5 all time favorite series. I truly hope some day it will be made into a film. The other thing I hope for is that some day it, and the rest of the series, will be turned into an eBook. I just don't understand the hold up as they series has been out a loooong time. - Thomas

About the Author

Tim Newburn is Professor of Criminology and Social Policy at the London School of Economics. Thorough but too heavy in critical criminology

This book is thorough and can be used as a text book in several classes. It does an excellent job of putting the theories in historical context. However, there are critical criminology beliefs sprinkled throughout the book in the guise of objectivity.

Excellent text!

I am finding this text to be excellent. It is fairly well written and as understandable as I expect a text of this nature. According to my professor it is the best criminology textbook written in the English language. I will be keeping this text after my class is finished, as a reference. Interesting chapter on history of crime as well (I was afraid that chapter would be boring).

Good book, bad delivery.

I tend to do 3 Stars for a great product and 2 more for great service and delivery. This book is great (I assume since our teacher loves it), but I was more than disappointed with my delivery.
I placed this order (I believe) on the 4th, and put one day shipping that I paid an absurd amount extra for, so I could get this book for my upcoming test on the 10th. More than enough time.
Not really.
Sure, it did get here in one day after it shipped, but the problem is I ordered it on the 4th and it didn't ship until the 10th. So I didn't get to even look at the book before my test.
I still got an 85, but blah. Now I have to do extra credit.
But really, good book. Just order it plenty before you need it.

About the Author
Steven Mintz is Professor of History and Director, American Cultures Program, at the University of Houston. His thirteen books include Domestic Revolutions: A Social History of American Family Life (1988; co-authored with Susan Kellogg); and a major interpretation of antebellum reform, Moralists & Modernizers: America's Pre-Civil War Reformers (1995). His most recent book, Huck's Raft: A History of American Childhood, received the Association of American Publishers R.R. Hawkins Award for the Outstanding Scholarly Book of 2004; the Organization of American Historians 2004 Merle Curti Award for the best book in social history; and the Texas Institute of Letters Carr P. Collins Award for the best non-fiction book of 2004.
