Fritz Scholder, Beautiful Contradiction

Sometime in the 1970's, I saw a televised documentary on Fritz Scholder. In one scene the artist steps into into his studio where he selects a pre-stretched canvas and proceeds to paint in an explosion of creativity. The result was an image of an indian unlike any I had seen before. This was a raw, honest, direct and non-idealized impression of the American indian. It was unavoidably political even as it remained art of the highest order. This left an indelible impression. I have loved Scholder's work ever since.

"Fritz Scholder: Indian Not Indian, "by Lowery Stokes is a superb book. It is beautifully printed. The reproductions are well chosen and appropriate and the essays and commentary by: Kevin Gover, John Haworth, Lowery Stokes Sims, Paul Chaat Smith, Leslie Wasserberger, Richard W. Hill offer a well rounded perspective on the artist and his work.

Fritz Scholder was a man of contradictions with a dark and spiritual side. He was one quarter Luiseno indian, with a predominately German heritage. His father had been a Bureau of Indian Affairs administrator, but Fritz did not grow up on a reservation and for most of his career he did not paint indians or indian themes. Yet he became one of the first instructors at Institute of American Indian Arts, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

I highly recommend to anyone with an interest in Fritz Scholder, painting, American Indians, the southwest and New Mexico.

Great document of an important show

If you missed NMAI's show of the same name, Indian/Not Indian is an essential book to add to your art library. Lots of beautiful illustrations accompany the detailed and knowledgeable essays about Scholder, a uniquely modern and American painter.

As a committed portraitist for much of his career, Scholder's painting does not fit neatly into the story of heroic abstraction that often gets taught as "the" history of 20th c. painting in America. But the energetic brushwork and piercing intellect he brings to the canvas make his works profound, hilarious, and disturbing, often at the same time.

The essays and documentation in the book help us to understand Scholder's strange but unwavering commitment to sharing knowledge through teaching, to recasting the fate of the Native artist, and to creating a unique lexicon of his vision.

About the Author
Swami Chetanananda is a monk of the Ramakrishna Order. Before coming to the United States, he worked in the editorial and publication departments of Advaita Ashrama, Mayavati, Himalayas and also at its Calcutta branch. He was an assistant minister of the Vedanta Society of Southern California from 1971 to 1978. He came to St. Louis in March, 1978 and at present is the minister of the Vedanta Society of St. Louis. Swami Chetanananda has written, edited, and translated many important books on Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, and Vedanta.

There is a Greek myth concerning a creature that when people look at it they see their wishes. No individual can ever see what the creature looks like for itself. It is impossible. They glance at 'It' and the image morphs into what they want to see. But the real image is still right in front of them.

The 'It' is the real form of the creature that the human mind cannot understand.

The myth explains our individual ego very well. We can't see the Thing in Itself, it is impossible. This doesn't mean that the Thing isn't real, the opposite is the case. This Thing is right here now!

This explains why people saw the Guru as either a God or a psychopath. The Guru is the Thing, God in human form. Only those with the correct inclination are given the prize of seeing God. The others saw a conman. The reality is that God was hidden but is manifested at the same time.

This is why those closest to Ramakrishna saw God.

This is a wonderful book that contains reminiscences of people who were intimately associated with Sri Ramakrishna. These reminiscences show how Sri Ramakrishna lived daily the spiritual message he taught, and how he showed a path to God for those who were interested in it. Excellent book.

Our family loves the Kumon workbooks. We have used them for 3 children over 5 different grade levels. So my mediocre 3-star review is not for the series as a whole, just this individual workbook.

As mentioned repeatedly in Kumon reviews, these are Workbooks full of two-page reviews to provide extra practice. Kumon books are not for teaching nor for tutoring on any concepts. Kumon gives no explanation and very few examples. These are for review, practice, and seeing what your student knows. Be prepared to walk them through difficult concepts because the book does not do that for you. Know what you're purchasing.

Regarding this specific text, the Decimal section of the book is just fine. My middling score is directly related to the lack of grade-appropriateness of this Fraction half of the book.

To the point, this is NOT a respectable 5th grade fraction review. It would be better labeled as a Summer Bridge review between 4th and 5th grade or possibly for the first month or two of 5th. There is not a single review of multiplying or dividing fractions. Not a single problem that calls on the student to find a common denominator.

If your student needs a lot of extra practice in adding and subtracting fractions that already have the same denominator, then this will do. If they need a lot of review of converting Fractions into Whole numbers or Improper Fractions into Mixed Numbers and back, then this will do. But, as I said, it is important to know what you're getting.

If your school distract is like ours, you'll need to get Kumon's 6th-grade Fraction book. My son is halfway through his 5th grade year and he is an average math student who frequently struggles with new math concepts and the fraction portion of this workbook is way below his level. You should know what you're buying.

too easy

We love Kumon books, but this one is a little easier for my fifth grader. It's right that children find learning easier when they tackle one skill set at a time. But when my daughter did half way of this book, she thought it includes too much easy practice, and she just needed more advanced math drills. She really likes the printable worksheets on Beestar (a wonderful website). They are probably the best among the many learning sites. Their worksheets are well-designed and have both time and accuracy targets set for children to practice. They not only teach the conventional math, but also give you the context and the thoughts behind the principles. My daughter's math sense is improved significantly since we used Beestar.

Interconnected Greek Myths of Love & Passion

I enjoyed the first and last stories the best.

In the first story, I truly got a feel for Dionysus and his love for Ariadne. There was not much to a plot there beyond the original outline of the myth, but plenty of hot sex and emotions. The fact that Dionysus had to wait, for a god, to get Ariadne and the fact that Theseus acted so noble, as befit his rank in the history books, to leave poor Ariadne alone, abandoned on an island made me very happy. I always appreciate an erotic retelling without having to go so far the story needs to be rewritten.

However, with all that said, the first story really didn't fit with the rest of the shorts.

The last story was the best written one, by far. Ms. Johnson was smart to end with that one. A new take on the Psyche and Eros tale. In my opinion, a far better version than the original. And, for me to say that, is surprising. I liked the premise setup with Erato dropping off a journal to read.

The other shorts, though entertaining aren't much more than smutty fluff.

P.S. My biggest beef is that Erato, the muse, was a woman. She was definitely not a man. That bothered me a lot... so much so I thought of putting this book down more than once and giving up entirely.
