Another excellent, 174 pages of "The Simpsons." Some of these comics are better than their later episodes. This book includes appearances by some less frequent characters like Doctor Nick, Homer's former psychotic boss Hank Scorpio, Luann Van Houten's boyfriend Pyro, Dr. Colossus, and even Waylon Smithers's favorite 8 1/2-incher...Malibu Stacy!

"Judge Marge"--Marge becomes a T.V. judge and her frequent absence causes her household to fall apart. I like the part where Lisa goes on a power trip after she starts wearing a monocle.
"Stacy's Busy Day!"--A comic short for Malibu Stacy! I love it! Let's have more of these! Malibu Stacy shows off some of her many careers and identities (my favorites are "KISS Army Stacy" and "Cosmetic Surgery Stacy"). There are also fan letters, one from a fan who Stacy thinks is a "sharp-eyed little girl" with "an unusual and charming name," Waylon Smithers.
"Viva Bart"--In a Duff Beer contest, Homer wins two weeks in Bosqueverde--a tropical paradise that has been in a state of perpetual civil war for the past thirty years.
"Beauty School Hellcats"--After Selma makes an effort to make DMV customers actually look good in their driver's license photos, she and Patty are given a vacation to beauty school to get rid of her creative impulses.

"Cruisin' for a Bruisin'"--After ruining his and Marge's cruise by giving booze to a recovering alcoholic dolphin, Homer takes Mr. Burns's discarded yacht to start his own cruise line, with some familiar Springfield couples as guests. Hank Scorpio appears at the end in a strip unrelated to this story (he's not one of my favorite characters).
"Crime Family Practice"--Short comic featuring Dr. Nick who is kidnapped to give medical treatment to the mob.
"Growing Pains"--Bart gets involved in a seed-selling scam, so The Simpsons put on a Seed Fair which includes a fashion report by Joan Rivers and her daughter. However, Mr. Burns, who's allergic to growing things (makes sense), may have the last say.
"The Abominable Dr. Colossus"--Dr. Colossus fans will like this book because he also appears in "Judge Marge." In this short, despite attempts at being evil and menacing, Dr. Colossus is seen as a lovable buffoon in Springfield.

"Merchants of Vengeance"--A wave of shoplifting plagues Springfield and shopkeepers Ned Flanders, Apu, and the comic Book Guy ban together to fight it. Comic Book Guy loves the crime-fighting group so much, he can't let it go even when the shoplifting stops. Comic Book Guy actually shows some emotion tearing up in one box.
"In Burns We Trust"--Mr. Burns takes over Rev. Lovejoy's church in his endless quest for more power. Meanwhile, Ned Flanders looks for a new church.
"How Marge Got Her Curtains Back"--In this short, Marge's curtains go down the garbage disposal and she's having a hard time finding that classic corncob pattern.

Captivating!

Dana Fuller Ross captured my interest in the first paragraph of Independence, Vol. I of Wagons West Series. He kept my interest through 22 more volumes of Wagons West plus the sequel of The Holts, An American Dynasty and a The Frontier Trilogy of Wagons West. In the story of the first wagon train from the east coast to Independence, Ross introduces the Holts, the Brentwoods, the Blakes, the Indian White Elk and many other characters that will dominate the pages of this imaginative story for the next 100 years. This becomes my own community as we struggle across the great rivers, plains, deserts and mountains to California, Oregon, Washington and Hiwaii. American History comes alive when this community becomes a part of the Discovery of Gold in the West, the development of Oregon and California, the Revolutions in Hawaii, Cuba and the Phillipines, and the World Wars I & II. I have never been so captivated by one writer as I have been with Dana Fuller Ross. I warn you if you read Independence you are in for many exciting hours of entertainment for some time to come. I read them all between February 1997 and February 1998 and was I sorry when I finished the last one.

Westward Ho! 1st Book In An Extraordinary Series!

The year is 1837. United States' President Andrew Jackson, his Vice-president, Martin Van Buren, and financier and fur trader, John Jacob Astor, are in a race with the British and the Russians to settle and claim the Oregon Territory. Jackson calls upon his close friend, mountain man and rugged veteran Sam Brentwood, to put together a wagon train with the purpose of traveling overland to Oregon and settling the territory. The train of prairie schooners eventually includes over 500 people - folks who were willing to risk their lives to make the first overland trip across America in an entourage of this kind. They were motivated by the gift of 600 acres of free land to homestead in Oregon, and the opportunity to start new lives. The financial situation in the US was terrible during this period. Due to a major depression many of the potential Oregonians had lost their jobs, life savings and/or property.
Brentwood, the wagonmaster, and his assistant Whip Holt, begin the journey in Long Island along with a beautiful, feisty widow, her younger sister, and the sister's elderly husband. The small group pick up more people and covered wagons as they slowly move cross-country to Independence, Missouri. Missouri is the frontier town where Sam Brentwood will set-up a trading depot and leave the wagon train in charge of Whip Holt. Missouri will be the pioneers' last look at civilization until the Pacific Northwest is reached.
This is Book 1 of 24 in Dana Fuller Ross's fabulous "Wagons West" series. This fictional account of the first wagon train to cross the US is extraordinary. The characters are complex and very well developed. They obviously grow and change throughout the journey of almost three years. The author vividly brings history to life here. And the politics behind the settling of the West are fascinating, as are the descriptions of the land and the Native Americans the group encounters along the way. As one would expect, the novel is filled with tales of adventure, hardship, courage, love, loss, tragedy and triumph. Many details have been taken from actual diaries and journals of early settlers. Reader BEWARE! Once you start this book you won't be able to stop until you have read all 24 novels. The next one is "Nebraska," and deals with the second leg of the trip from Independence to the foothills of the rocky Mountains. Very highly recommended!

The story that started the Wagon's West series!!

This is the first book in the Wagon's West series.
The president of the USA is calling in favors. He wants to make sure that the west is American territory and not British or Russian. To do this he calls on his old friend Sam Brentwood and asks him to start a wagon train to Oregon. Sam agrees and will guide the train to Independence, MO where he will stay and make a way station for the future trains to come.
This is where you first meet all the main characters and learn the interaction between them and the types of things that they must face if they are going to try and forge a new life in the west for themselves.
This is the story of their struggles against the British & Russian forces trying to keep them for making the trip.
This book is one of the 7th printing from back in the early 80's. If you are interested in the settlement of the American West this is one series that you need to revisit.

Awesome course.

This is, hands down, THE course to have if you're aiming to learn Afrikaans through self-study. The textbook provides a comprehensive amount of material for beginners in the language, and it also works well as a refresher course if you're looking to brush up on your skills. The dialogues fall more easily into the "everyday life" category than in the "exclusively for tourists" section (one of the major drawbacks of other Afrikaans courses available), and the rate of speech used by the native speakers throughout most of the course is the closest to everyday rhythm that a learner could ask for. The accompanying audio is clear and easy to follow (there are a few points where the speakers switch up a word or two, but it's very easy to identify these points and understand what was said : one example, "ek is bekommerd oor jou" is said as "ek bekommer my oor jou". Easy to notice, and both are grammatically correct -- it won't throw you when it comes).

A huge advantage to the language itself is that it's very similar to English, so many of the words will be easy to recognize. The word order might be a little difficult to pick up, but don't let this put you off -- this course will put a strong foundation under your ability to speak and write the language, and becoming more proficient in Afrikaans can be a breeze once you thoroughly complete this course. Mimicking the native speakers is sound advice; once you can speak confidently and sound authentic, it's so much easier to progress and take on more vocabulary and to get a better feel for the flow of the language.

I can't rave enough about this course. As an experienced self-study learner of several languages, I can say that this is one of the best courses out there for beginners and intermediate learners alike.

Inadequate

After all the rave reviews for this course, I hate to rain on the parade. However, I feel that some crucial parts are missing from the other reviews. Yes, it's a good book and for exactly the reasons other reviewers have mentioned. The grammar is very well defined and Afrikaans is a remarkably easy language to learn.

Unfortunately, this books comes with a major problem. No wordlists! In almost any other Colloquial or Teach Yourself course, each dialogue is followed by a word list containing the words used in the dialogue. That's the way you study the words and enlarge your vocabulary. Not so in this course. For the first few lessons, the dialogues are followed by an English translation. This isn't a very good substitute, especially not as word order is very different in Afrikaans. You can't be sure whích English words mean what, so you can only learn phrases like a parrot. After a few lessons, even this English translation is dropped and your left with dialogues in Afrikaans with no wordlist nor translation! How is this different from reading a newspaper in Afrikaans and having a dictionary to check up each word? Not at all, and that's free on-line.

I usually prefer Colloquial courses over Teach Yourself, but in this case I strongly recommend the excellent course Teach Yourself Afrikaans. The author of that course didn't try to get off too easy by ignoring the word lists and the result is that Teach Yourself Afrikaans is an excellent book. The author of this book was lazy, and it is the reader who pays the cost. So Afrikaans is an easy language, but this book makes everything it can to make learning it harder. Teach Yourself Afrikaans makes it easier.
