About the Author
Timothy Garton Ash is the author of The File, In Europe's Name, and three volumes of " history of the present" The Polish Revolution (winner of the Somerset Maugham Award), The Uses of Adversity (for which he was awarded the Prix Europé en de l'Essai), and The Magic Lantern, his personal account of the revolutions of 1989, which has now appeared in fifteen languages. A Fellow of Saint Antony's College, Oxford, he lives in Oxford with his wife and two sons.

Eyewitness Account of the Birth of Solidarity

Timothy Ash was sent to Poland in August 1980 to cover a strike by workers in a Gdansk shipyard. He ended up covering a 16 month struggle for national independence which ended when the Polish Army declared a State of War and crushed the Solidarity movement in December 1981. His account is compelling, human and covers not only events in Warsaw, but other Solidarity centres and strikes around Poland. This book is a wonderfully rich introduction to contemporary Poland and the events and attitudes that have shaped Polish thinking since the war. If you are interested in reading about the Polish struggle for independence this is the book for you.

Chronicle of Solidarity movement

This book, as far as I can tell, remains to this day one of the best written and most comprehensive reports on what was happening during the 18 or so months from the creation of Solidarity movement in Poland in August 1980 to the imposition of martial law on December 13, 1981. And the library of books on this subject, as far as English language is concerned, isn't big anyway.

First reason - the author was right where the action was, literally. And, unlike many other foreign correspondents, he did not limit himself to shallow, superficial observations calculated for fast print; he went further. He managed to get in touch with many Solidarity activists, on various levels, and through participation (as an observer) in meetings as well as conversations and interviews succeeded in getting more in depth description of what exactly was happening and explanation why and for what purpose.

Reporting of events, as important as it is in itself, was not the only feature of this book. Timothy Garton Ash also offers quite in depth, even if at times controversial, analysis of events and critical portraits of some key players in the political events - on both sides of the political 'barricade'. The characteristic of Wojciech Jaruzelski, the head of Polish government at the time (both Prime Minister and First Secretary of "PZPR" the Communist Party), particularly stands out as original and convincing.

I myself was actively involved in the Solidarity movement at that time and I can testify to the general accuracy of the statements contained in this book. No particular story, account of an event or critical analysis strikes me as improbable or outright false. Last but not least what also helps the book considerably is its lively, captivating narrative. It is, simply, a good read.

If the aim of the author was to bring Poland, its contemporary history and predicament closer to an English speaking reader, he graciously succeeded. I deem this book an essential reading for anyone who wants to get closer understanding of contemporary Poland and also some understanding of how it was like to live under the Communist rule in those years. Very highly recommended.

Thought-provoking at times

This is a good book for those interested in what happened in Poland during the 1980s. I found this book to be thought-provoking at times and the author, Professor Ash tries to maintain an objective outlook. However, there are parts where the book becomes boring (I will not mention where since I do not want to ruin any portion of this book for you). Ash is a great British writer, but he too at times brings his own British-outlook and this creates prejudice and bias. This, however, doesn't take from the book the fact that it is a great window into the Solidarity movement that erupted in Poland as a result of the authoritarian government.

Enjoyed every page

This book is like a breath of fresh air, being different from the usual thriller. The writing is tight and the pace fast. I appreciated the fact that there was no gore or graphic violence. The mark of a great psychological thriller is that the reader is engaged with the mental twists and turns without being distracted by blood and gore. The dog was adorable and very much part of the story. I almost gave the book only 4 stars because of the annoying way Anna blindly put herself in danger over and over again; but the writing was so good and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to overlook that and give it 5 stars.

Unbelievable

I am flabbergasted as to how to rate this book. It's totally original but very strange. There are parts that are a 1 star because they are so ridiculous, and for a smart woman this leading lady just keeps doing some reckless stuff and other parts that are 5 star as the pace and energy of the writing is addictive. It truly was exhausting being in this women's head.
Despite not liking the main character, Anna, I was unable to put this book down. I found the main character to be shallow and unbelievable in that her behaviour does not make sense to me. Loved the dog - Wispa, which was the most believable facet to the book. However none of this deterred me from wanting to know what was going on in this women's life.
Rebound is the debut novel from a very promising writer; Aga Lesiewicz. Not only is there a man cloaked in mystery, dubbed "the Dior man" running into Anna randomly on the picturesque Hampstead Heath, but there is the neighbour who seems to be taking too much of an interest in Anna, and the paranoia that builds with gifts of flowers and vandalism. When the count of sexual assaults, and, eventually murders grows, Anna finds herself caught up in a dramatic storyline. Ultimately, I've settled on 4 stars because I have a friend who LOVED it. So I do think it may have clouded my expectation.... Either way, be prepared to suspend reality.

Impressive Debut

I would like to thank NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest and open review.
This is a new author to me so I wasn't sure what to expect.
What I got was a tense psychological thriller that had me hooked from the start.
Anna is a successful media executive with a handsome boyfriend and a chocolate labrador called Wispa.
When she meets a new man strange things start to happen.
This is a book of two parts. The first about Anna and her new man and the second is concerned with trying to solve the mystery of the strange happenings.
I thought I had worked out who was responsible but I was totally wrong.
This was a very impressive debut novel and I will certainly look out for more by this author.

About the Author

Leonard J. Hopper, RLA, FASLA, is Senior Associate with Mark K. Morrison Associates Ltd in New York City. He teaches and coordinates the Master's in Landscape ArchitectureTechnology Sequence courses at the City College School of Architecture, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture, and teaches the technology sequence of courses in Columbia University's Master of Science in Landscape Design Program. He is past president of ASLA and the LAF, and is a frequent speaker at universities and conferences nationwide.

Outstanding resource for landscape architects (and students too)

Leonard Hopper has done a tremendous job of compiling an immense amount of information that covers a broad expanse of topics relevant to landscape architecture, from site analysis to the design of zoo exhibits and everything in between. One of the book's best and most useful features is the enormous compilation of detailed construction diagrams for all sorts of site elements. To top things off, the entire book is very well organized and easy to use.

For years the only book with similar information was Time Saver Standards, which I have always found to be difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in the kind of detail I really need. Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards is a FAR better book.

LA Graphic Standards

The book as a specific product is very helpful. It has page upon page of useful information for in the field. (and i have been told from an editing committee member that the only difference between the student ed. and professional is some 'fluff' and better paper) overall it's a great tool for any landscape architect, as well as being fairly compact and lightweight for what it is.

Invaluable Resource

This book is essential for all Landscape Architects and designers and I highly recommend purchasing this latest printing. This book contains everything a designer needs for information and industry-wide standards that are used everyday as well as some that are not used everyday - this book puts it all together into one concise reference that should be kept within arms reach at all stages of the design process. I currently work with the author and he is extremely knowledgeable and experienced. Even if you have previous editions of this book, get this edition as it has been updated with current standards.

Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates was written by Mary Mapes Dodge in 1865. It is the story of a Dutch boy and his family and friends as they strive to overcome economic and personal hardships in early 19th Century Netherlands. The novel’s title refers to the silver skates to be awarded to winner of the ice-skating race Hans is determined to enter.

This eBook edition is illustrated by French illustrator Théophile Schuler (1821-1878). His etchings were used to illustrate the 1899 edition.

Mary Mapes Dodge was born in 1831 in New York City. In 1859, after the death of her husband she started writing and editing two magazines “Working Farmer” and the “United States Journal”. She published a collection of short stories “The Irvington Stories” in 1864. A year later, she completed Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates which became an instant bestseller. She died in 1905.

Fun read!!!!

This story is absolutely one of the most entertaining stories I've ever read. It gives you a "look" a Holland in the past while captivating you with the fun story of 5 friends skating from (either Haarlem or Leyden) to Amsterdam. It is a fun adventure with surprises along the way.

I last read this book while in sixth grade. I loved the story then and still enjoyed this 're-read. I had forgotten several of the subplots but have always loved old novels that ties everything up in the end.

I've always wanted to read this book when I was younger. I am much older now and enjoyed reading it. A very good read if I say so myself. Well written, Ms. Dodge.
