I loved the movie, and was quite glad to see this book

This graphic novel contains no less than nine stories starring DreamWorks super-villain turned superhero, Megamind! I loved the movie, and was quite glad to see this book. My young reader and I both loved seeing further adventures of Megamind, and really enjoyed reading this book together.

We both give it our highest recommendations!

By the way, the nine stories are:
Can I Have This Dance? - It's dance night at Metro City High, and young Megamind has a plan to upstage his long-time rival. But, knowing Megamind, it's bound to fail!

Minion's Day Off - It's Minion's day off, and when Megamind pushes a button he shouldn't, he puts into effect another one of his old plans to destroy Metro City. For once, he might just succeed!

Minion, Where's The Car? - Megamind needs to return some DVDs before they are late, so he needs his invisible car quickly...but, where is it?

Gilad manages to offer both a sense of humor and accessibility to this usually dry topic. Not only does the book contain solid insider's tips about the publishing world and how to navigate it, but it also offers those with a passion for reading the guidelines on how to turn their hobby into a freelance career.

Great proofreading resource

I've been doing some freelance proofreading work, but I didn't know how much I still had to learn until reading this book! Sue Gilad has a lot of information: everything from grammar rules and spelling mistakes to the differences between copyediting and proofreading (glad SOMEONE could finally pinpoint the differences!). This book is clearly written and a wonderful resource. The only thing I think it could have improved upon was the section for finding freelance jobs. In Gilad's online book Paid to Proofread (paidtoproofread[dot]com), she offers more in-depth suggestions about creating a resume from zilch, and also offers more info about approaching editors. On the other hand, the Dummies book contains way more information about resources and grammar. All in all, this is the most comprehensive and clearly written book on proofreading I've read.

This is an excellent resource for anyone who has copyediting/proofreading skills and wants to turn them into a profession. I am embarking on a freelance career and this book has been invaluable (there are chapters specifically dealing with freelancing). Louis Golomb's translation of the Pierre Louys classic

Originally published in France in 1896, the English translation to get is the one by Louis Golomb, published by Lancer Books in 1962. In the preface the Lancer publishers give themselves accolades for being the first and only publisher to release a totally uncensored English edition of the classic - all previous translations, they claim, obfuscated the book's more "licentious" qualities. Not so here - Golomb's translation leaves nothing to the imagination, making the book seem like a wonderful slice of that forgotten sixties trash fiction genre of "toga porn."

The novel is better than it has any right to be. Despite its being over a hundred years old, it's still well beyond most historical fiction of today - it's not a bunch of Christian glurge, there are no "detectives in togas," and there's no poorly-written military fiction. It is an exquisitely told tale with interesting and human characters that sings with a poetry seemingly cut whole cloth from Antiquity itself. Not surprising, as Louys' chief claim to fame these days is actually fooling the establishment of his time that he'd discovered a heretofore forgotten collection of ancient Greek poetry by a disciple of Sappho - "The Songs of Bilitis," which he published a French "translation" of in 1894. Turns out these poems were in fact created and written by Louys himself, but the hoax perpetuated for many years.

Aphrodite takes place in Ptolemaic Alexandria, during the climax of the Hellenistic Age. It details the star-crossed love story of uber-beautiful courtesan Chrysis and the terminally-bored but uber-handsome sculptor Demetrios. Well, this love story's not exactly "star-crossed." In fact it's downright twisted. Chrysis actually spurns Demetrios, a man who can have any woman he wants; instead, she demands he accomplish three tasks before she will give herself to him. These tasks embroil Demetrios in thievery, sacrilege, and murder, eventually ruining the lives of just about everyone.

A compact novel, without any of the padding historical fiction usually suffers from. You can find earlier English translations for free on the Web, but I'd recommend you seek out this edition, which, again, is faithfully rendered into English, no holds barred.

The prose is exquisite, the imagery sumptuous, an all around delightful reading experience. This book brings to life the erotic poetry of the courtesan's life, creating a subtle throbbing innuendo of sexual delight with every well-crafted word and image. The lesbian wedding ceremony should be the gold standard for centuries to come, so pay attention here, ladies!

An engaging look at "love" in the ancient world

This is not a "romance" as in our modern terminology, in fact, it is anything but romantic. The setting - ancient Alexandria - is a society that prizes physical love, wit, and wealth. The protagonists, a courtesan and a sculptor, are the ultimate in physical perfection. He is famous for his art, is the queen's lover, and is sought after by women. He is the rock star of his day. He has it all, but feels bored, trapped, and empty. She is famous for her skills and the wealth, social standing, and power they bring her. Her world revolves around her vanity. When they meet, high drama, narrated calmly by the author, follows. The description of the society is as interesting as the plot itself. The story is highly erotic but not explicit. This book was banned by US Customs for several years as it seemed to advocate the pursuit of sensuality. It does so only in portraying the consequences of worshiping sensuality in a void of other values. The author's descriptions of light throughout - the colors and shades of sunrise, sunset, the sun, and the moon - present a pallet of contrast to the glittering but hard characters.

This book will be a valuable resource to any clinician involved in the care of patients undergoing congenital heart surgery. This is the first full book written by a highly experienced pediatric perfusionist on the topic of perfusion for congenital heart surgery. All current and important topics are very neatly organized and thoroughly discussed. There is a helpful chapter in which bypass considerations are provided based on diagnosis. This will be a useful tool to reference often.

Good concept, poorly executed

I am totally on board with the authors' main concept, which is why it was so frustrating to try and read this book.

From start to finish it is poorly written and edited, overly verbose when it could be much clearer and to the point, and nauseatingly vague on important details. For example, it dives into frequent flyer programs without clearly saying what they are, presents grandiose visions of how Facebook could be improved by a leaderboard, and seems to think Starbucks branches have a VIP lane. Plus it keeps using the awful term "Funware" to describe all this.

Throughout, tantalising references are made to interesting concepts or events -- the Microsoft commercial, Flyertalk, Nike+ -- and either assume outright the reader is familiar with these, or provide little followup information for the reader to find out more. Even the section on Richard Bartle, the deity of player characterisation, was poor - lifted straight from Bartle's work with little original material about how this might apply to today's consumers.

If you have any familiarity with games or reward mechanics, you will find this book as disappointing as I did. I wanted to like it, and I want books like this to spread the message that games and fun are a key part of customer engagement. But this book failed to deliver, and needs a serious edit before the 2nd edition. Read an article on gamification instead, and you will come away with all its key points without having wasted your time and money trying to read this.

Useless collection of links and some frequent flyer examples

I've bought this book from the self announced "Expert of Gamification" Gabe Zicherman to learn more about Gamification and how other companies applied gaming mechanics successfully. Boy, was I disappointed when I read the book (and I read it until the final pages patiently waiting for something positive). So why was I so disappointed you might ask?

- 16% of the books pages are a collection of articles which are used as reference and the rest is an index of words used (nice way of filling up your book with space in case you don't have anything to say!)
- a further 7% is filled up by Cover, Table of Content, Foreword and Acknowledgement - that makes it 23% of useless pages that I paid for!
- the author is quite well in repeating the same over and over again. He's basically stretching his main messages which can be summarized in a normal 16 page pdf article over the full book
- most interesting chapter is about the history of the frequent flyer program, that is for me, a person not born in the US ;-)
- a full chapter is spent on Bartle's Player Types, interesting if you're new to the concept but 100% taken from Bartle, so you learn nothing knew if you heard that before
- he's only referring to a couple of example and then points out mostly ones that failed - would be nice to hear also about positive examples of Gamification
- nothing is being said about how to combine game mechanics to engage the customer for a longer period of time, no wonder Gamification is being seen as a buzz word and everybody thinks it's only badges and some frequent flyer program
- the few examples he gives aren't going really deep, they aren't coming from working with these companies but rather from research what is available on the internet about it. If he did indeed work there, then he seems to be bound to only talk superficial bla bla about the work he did with them

All in all like I already said one of the few books where I'm really disappointed that I bought them. Especially so as I started to read the first few pages online here at Amazon, but I thought he it's going to get deeper and more interesting later on. I should have trusted my own feelings based on those pages that are available online. If you like them, buy the book, if they don't deliver a real interest for you to read further on, stay away from buying it, you won't regret it.

Overly Repetitive, No Much Substance!

You will read Frequent Flyer programs, McDonald's Monopoly, etc. across different chapters. It seems there were no coordination between these two authors. The whole book reads like a patchwork stitched with pieces and repeated pieces! It would be much better if they can focus on a concept and a few illustrating cases in each chapter. A waste of money.
