A Thorough Overview and Application Guide of NP

Not a bad book, considering it gives you the fundamentals of a variety of topics well covered in network programming. It is the only source of its kind I have found to address network programming without being almost exclusively tied to web development. I looked at it in light of it's C# orientation (because I'm a VB.NET developer), and found a lot of good basic coverage. Bewarned: If you are not an intermediate programmer, whether C# or VB.NET, it will take a little to get up to speed. The style is not bad - surprising, given the number of authors, and you CAN learn from it. I give it actually a 4.2-4.5, but I can't give it quite the 5-star rating. :-P

Back to basics

There is a classic series, "Internetworking with TCP/IP" by Comer and Stevens (1991) that describes the Internet of that time. Just before the Web burst on the scene. The books have C code that show how to perform network programming.

Well, this .NET book reminds me very much of that series. To good approximation, the authors have covered the same functionality. But now using the .NET environment as a development platform. The language is fully object oriented, unlike C. Much of the book is taken up with showing how the default libraries/classes that deal with networking.

If you have indeed used C and Comer and Stevens for networking, then you should appreciate what this book does. It gives a far richer vocabulary of prebuilt functionality, to handle those tedious and error prone low level manipulations. These libraries mimic what Java also offers for network programming. So if you are migrating from Java, there is much common ground here.

The book takes you back to the basics of network understanding. No pretty but vapid GUI to obscure the concepts. The UI, so to speak, is stdout and stdin and the filesystem. Before the Web and the browser metaphor became prevalent, this is how most of us programmed.

Another merit of the book is its coverage of IPv6. Still fairly new. But you can start familiarising yourself here. The authors also find space for brief explanations of cryptographic methods in .NET.

Must-have read for working with protocols in .NET

I was really surprised at the ease of reading with this book offered. As it seems to be one of the last remaining books left over from the old Wrox days, the "Pro" in the title would denote a very high level of material, often assuming a great deal of talent on the part of the reader and skipping the necessary introductory concepts and giving piecemeal code samples. This totally isn't that way at all. The book's back cover lists it as "Beginner/Intermediate" and it delivers on its promise.



Put it this way - I'm a lifelong web dev who's been doing more and more client/server work, and I got a ton of useful information for my projects in this work. Even as the book starts to get into material for which there is no easy way of describing, the authors don't deviate from using simple English and practical, plainclothes, repetitive examples to ensure the readers gets it before progressing to more in-depth topics.



Principal author Christian Nagel (whose writing I've long appreciated) starts out with a very thorough rundown of basic networking concept, the OSI model and the TCP/IP protocol stack, that any IT professional should peruse as a primer. He then presents the particulars of network programming in .NET, such as working with streams and sockets, and then drills down into individual protocols, devoting a chapter each to the major forms of network communication. The major protocols for communicating over networks and the Internet are all examined and expanded upon - SNMP, TCP, UDP, SMTP, HTTP, with helpful code samples. The book also briefs the reader on the importance of .NET Remoting on more than one occasion.



The book isn't one that's filled to the brim with code snippets you can instantly plug into your applications, but there are several very nice demonstrations and couple good sample apps (an FTP client, a multicast chat app, a simple e-mail utility, a picture viewer, etc.) that demonstrate the high-level concepts in the book's latter chapters.



In criticism, I found Chapter 5 - "Raw Socket Programming" was obviously written by a different author and uses a slightly different coding convention. While it's not an incriminating factor that should detract one from buying this book, it is something I would hope the editors would look to change for the next version, as the difference between the book's majority voicing and this one chapter - namely in its use of grammar and syntactical layout is a little too painfully obvious.



I also enjoyed the chapter introducing the reader to working with IPv6, although I thought it might have been better suited for placement further into the book or as an appendix, and not in Chapter 6. Additionally, I would have wished for more samples featuring using peer-to-peer networking architecture (there was one, I think), and a bit more meat to the discussion of .NET Remoting, perhaps in its own chapter.



But semantics notwithstanding, this is an outstanding title, being well-written and covering all the major considerations of .NET network programming with. This is easily a 5/5 work.

In Zweig’s view, Balzac set out to emulate his childhood hero Napoleon. Writing 20 hours a day, Balzac’s literary ambition was “tantamount to monomania in its persistence, its intensity, and its concentration.” His characters, each similarly driven by one desperate urge, were more vital to Balzac than people in his daily life.

In Zweig’s reading, Dickens embodied Victorian England and its “bourgeois smugness”. His characters aspire to “A few hundred pounds a year, an amiable wife, a dozen children, a well-appointed table and succulent meats to entertain their friends with, a cottage not too far from London, the windows giving a view over the green countryside, a pretty little garden, and a modicum of happiness.” The ideal of middle-class respectability suffuses Dickens’ fiction.

Dostoevsky drew on the struggles of his own life to illuminate the contradictions of the human soul. In Zweig’s view, his heroes had no desire to be citizens or ordinary human beings. While Balzac’s heroes “would gladly have subjugated the world, Dostoevsky’s heroes wished to transcend it.”

About the Author
Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was an outstanding Austrian novelist, playwright, journalist, and biographer whose work became very popular in the US, South America, and Europe especially between the 1920s and 1930s. In 1904 he earned his doctorate degree in philosophy at the University of Vienna. Throughout his life he remained a pacifist, and instead of becoming a soldier at the start of World War I, he worked in the Archives of the Ministry of War. He became friends with notable people in history, including Romain Rolland, Sigmund Freud, and Arthur Schitzler. Among his most famous writings are Beware of Pity, Chess Story, and his memoir The World of Yesterday.

The first of a proposed three volume series

Perspective from Vienna

The title itself is fascinating enough. All the studies reveal great insights about the three authors and the countries that they are writing about. In a sense, they are indeed archeologists of the national spirit of the countries they write about at that time but also of our present time as the reverberations of the same national spirit are still present in new forms.

As a prism through which to view the present with the amazing observations that the author makes, a whole new world opens up about possibilites and expectations as well as entrenched national modes of thought. In a sense their books are to some degree time capsules through which the English can find a model of Englishness, or the French Frenchness and the Russian Russianness. And consider the burdens of all the tendencies that are implied within that.

The question arises whether indeed there is anything else that can give a clue to the national identities in question other than from these three authors. One feels that although the wonderful reliefs of national character so indiosycratically created are in fact a fragmented view, that is not the whole story. So the three authors in some way have delimited national character with the effect of making us lazy is deciding what is our cultural and personal identity, our history and what should be our destiny in the sense of creating a liveable world for ourselves.

Many of the issues are no longer able to be considered from the perspective of a person living at the time the book was written but the honesty and directness of expression is refreshing indeed when held up against what is written nowadays. There are no shades of meaning nor is there any overt partisanship. The overall experience is that the reader is being treated very respectfully and even intimately and tenderly by the writer.

Hardly any surprise then that Stefan Zweig was a great writer himself concerned about the evolution of a human being in the cultural context of nationality, environment and cognitive psychology. The Royal Game shows the full extent of this.

Sad also that such a civilised spokesman of truth, even-handedness and tolerance should have committed suicide with his wife in 1941. The intellectual honesty that emerges from the book obviously bore a price in human terms. I cannot reccommend it enough to those who wish to be enlightened about these three writers, and to begin to understand what it was they were doing, how they were doing it and what that means now.

Great Book Poorly Introduced

This book recommends itself. Zweig was a justly popular literary gent in his day who wrote one great novel (BEWARE OF PITY), several excellent novellas (his preferred form), popular biographies (MARIE ANTOINETTE), lit crit (the book under review), even opera liberetti (he was Richard Strauss's favorite librettist after Hofmannsthal).

The only thing that's slightly puzzling about this book is that both Balzac and Dickens are given less than half the pages devoted to Dostoevsky, but Zweig published a posthumous "long biography" (his phrase) about Balzac. Maybe he was saving his research for the biography? Or, more likely, he didn't read Russian and so couldn't write a long book about Dostoevsky and compensated with this longer portrait?

In any case, even more puzzling is why the foreword to this book was written by an academic hack who's totally unsympathetic to Zweig. He quotes the confused, confusing Hannah Arendt, who dismissed Zweig as a useless humanist without political sense, an anomaly in the 20th century. Zweig's faith in "world culture" was his personal fantasy, and Arendt apparently considered his suicide a cry of useless despair, rather than a justified act.

This is the general tenor of the introduction, and I suggest that in future editions of the book it be removed, because it sheds no light on what Zweig was about and uses him as a cockshy for the hack's view of "commitment". (His incidental judgments about literary Vienna aren't very insightful either: Robert Musil is second-rate compared with Zweig and certainly with Hermann Broch.)

Another great series

I don't think there's anyone who doesn't like N.R. Walker's book.
I absolutely have the same concept with hers :
'Likes it when they do dirty, dirty things… but likes it even more when they fall in love'.

Spencer Cohen series gives you enough time to 'feels' how they fall in love with each others. And that made the series so beautiful and perfect. There's no rush that will sometimes make you wonder 'when and how and why the characters fell in love so deeply like that??'.

The author made you see and understand why and how they were drawn to each other, how their feelings have changed and tried to adjust...Slowly. I love it very much. Well, you may thought, it's a series so there's enough pages and numbers of book to be able to split, but the fact is that there are so many series out there but very few can make it good like this.

I love her writing style that the story will be narrated by first person all along the way (I'm not much a fan of alternating style), and still could manage to make reader fall in love with both main characters nearly as same. This is a fine art in my point of view.

Oh, and I think N.R. Walker can become music (shop)'s representative as a sideline job (laugh).
Reading her books so far, I cannot count how many albums or songs I have been buying because of her characters.
I thought I bought quite a numbers when I read 'Red Dirt Heart' series, including many country songs I normally don't like that much. Not including another BD set of Die Hard series (while I already owned DVD version..)

And because of Spencer and Andrews, after finishing this series, I've bought (of course!) Jeff Buckley's Grace Legacy album together with his Live version one (sorry Spencer I don't have record player now so I have to buy CD instead).
And although I'm normally classical music fan, I also bought another album of Moonlight sonata by Wilhelm Kempff, and 2 albums of vocal classical jazz music (I love 'At Last' too), and an album of Art Tatum !!
Not to mention about 'How to Train Your Dragon' BD ( I already have DVD as well).
These two super cute guys made me spent a lot!!! (laugh)

Thank God, there's no those 'magazines' available...like, for real....ha.

Anyway, thank you so much for introducing many 'Beauty' to me, N.R. Walker.

So Much Love!

I'm not sure what it will take to get N.R. Walker to write a 4th book, but whatever it is, I'm prepared to pay. Spencer and Andrew are simply a pleasure to read. The story of how they fell in love, and where their relationship was going (like we didn't know), culminates in the sweetest, most amazing ending. My heart was bursting with happiness while reading this. I'm ready to stop everything and read all three books again. Nothing in the story is so heavy that it takes away from the sweetness. Nothing is too sweet that it takes away from all the serious issues that come up. Everything is perfect, and balanced wonderfully, and I'm sure that my gushing will come off as me being a total loon.

I don't care!

I love this series. If we can't get another book about Spencer and Andrew specifically, how about a book about Yanni and Peter? I just want more.

I feel so lucky that all books were out so I devoured them .
This is a review for all three .
I met Spencer then Spencer met Andrew as a fake boyfriend .. you could see there was beginning of a connection ..Spencer,s friends think highly of him . That warmed my heart .
Their business grew into a deep friendship but a relationship was growing and it grew into sometime so very special.
They cared about each other took time to love and they did love deeply ....... I so love these books I wished I didn't work ...
The story was extremely well written and with love that flowed off the pages .
All the characters were perfect . I could go on and on - the tattoos............ Love

This is an horrendous story leaving many questions about family ...

This is an horrendous story leaving many questions about family services, the role of mandatory reporting and government departments. Katherine X and others in a similar situation need our support, not condemnation. However, I did find the book to be somewhat repetitive and drawn out.

Highly opinionated and superficial

Blah. Joyner uses the preface to justify the book's obvious shortcomings: "It is comparatively economical in price and size. That's the reason for it's length, the lack of companion CDs, lyrics, and color photographs. Paper, copyright permissions, and color printing cost a lot of money." So be aware, this is a low-budget item in various respects. It's just barely substantial enough for a school to get away with telling parents and the district BoE that the subject was taught. If you want something that does more than scratch the surface, or provides more than the absolute minimum of textbook production value, look elsewhere. The British Invasion deserves more than 9 pages plus a couple of song analyses.

One might think that, given the apparent importance of brevity, Mr. Joyner would skew the ratio of fact and opinion more in the direction of fact, particularly when some of the opinions he expresses are utterly misguided. To wit: "Stadium rock continued through the 1980s with bands such as Styx, Rush, Boston, Kansas, and Heart. The music of these bands was inherently formulaic and corporate and would lead to major underground rebellions along the way with musical styles such as disco, punk, and grunge."

Rush's music is formulaic and corporate? Disco was a rebellion against bands like Styx or Kansas? Such assertions throw every other opinion in the text into doubt. Also, the famous 3-song Yes album is titled "Close To The Edge", not "Closer To The Edge". Let's call that one a typo, but speaking of that band, it's a strange editorial decision to make the heading of the section about them "Rick Wakeman and Yes". Why put it that way? Rick's a legend, but to suggest that he was the primary source of Yes's prog sound is a real stretch. "Roundabout", which is arguably the band's most popular classic progressive rock song, features some great playing by Wakeman, but it was composed by Jon Anderson and Steve Howe. Many of Yes's records don't even feature Wakeman as a band member, and his solo efforts made far less of a contribution to the progressive rock genre than the band that made him famous, let alone King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc.

The edition I have is called the "Jersey City Edition" but in the section about jazz-rock fusion there is no mention of one of the absolute founding fathers of the genre, guitarist Al DiMeola, who is from Jersey City. Also unseen in the text is PM Dawn, a couple of Jersey City boys whose contribution to hip-hop is worth at least a sentence or two.

The writing is decent. The artists and styles that are mentioned are certainly essential. But I have reservations about recommending this book for classroom use, and certainly not for personal education.

This book does not look bad at all. It seems to provide a more or less thorough history of american popular music. It is organized and would be a good study guide. The first edition came out in 1993, so all or most of the information in this volume cannot have just been ripped off the web.

American Popular Music

The Joyner book an excellent survey of popular music. I chose it for a college general survey course on popular music I taught in Sping 10--it was a great class and the students reacted well to the book. Joyner treats each genre of popular music in a chronological manner, showing their development and influence on each another. The section on courtry music is especially interesting. ITunes links are provided to songs covered in the text. A number of the ITunes links are not the same arrangements discussed in the text, but they are easy enough to track down. I give this book a high recommendation, especially to anyone looking for a general overview of American popular music.
