About the Author

Bella Helmer Chudnovsky earned her Ph.D. in applied physics at Rostov State University (RSU) in Russia. For the first 25 years, she worked as a scientist at the Institute of Physics at RSU and at the University of Cincinnati. During the last 12 years of her career, she worked as an R&D engineer for Schneider Electric-Square D Company, where her principal areas of activities were aimed at resolving multiple aging problems of power distribution equipment. She has published 40 papers in national and international technical journals and conference proceedings.

The works of Ridolfo Capo Ferro, or CapoFerro if you prefer, is a cornerstone of modern historical fencing. Jared Kirby's insightful and detailed presentation of CapoFerro is masterful. I recommend that a copy of Tom Leoni's interpretation of CapoFerro also be included as an insightful addition and another detailed source for the student or instructor of this most rewarding martial art.

Good Information, a Few Flaws : A Teacher's Perspective

I really love the time and attention to detail that went into creating this book for advancing players. There are a few outright errors and some glaring typos (hence 4 stars), but on the whole, this book is full of good information.

Jerry Moore aims in this book to teach you how to make your own chord melody solos without teaching you much music theory or relying on traditional notation. As a player with a master's degree in music composition, I personally don't understand why anyone wouldn't want to read music (the system we have has had hundreds of years to develop and is the simplest/quickest way to transmit the musical information of pitch and rhythm), but I know there are those out there that don't want to touch it, and this book is for you.

Moore notates all the songs in this book with chord diagrams. I personally find a chord diagram for every note to be a little cumbersome, but for teaching the concept of a chord melody solo I can see the advantages - primarily that of designating fingerings on chords with added melody notes. The biggest drawback of the system is that you must know the timing for the songs in this book, as there is no mention of rhythm or attempt to notate it.

So, why four stars if I'm so put out by a 'chord diagram' method? Well, because this book will get you past the 5th fret, playing the higher inversions of all the common ukulele chords. Moore begins the book with a series of charts that are simply wonderful, charting all the common chords with inversions up to the 12th fret. Having it laid out so simply before you makes it easy to practice these inversions.

I've seen a chart of all the individual notes that can be found on the ukulele fretboard before (which can frankly be a bit overwhelming), but Moore gives you a seperate chart for each note, which is really cool (there is a mistake on the Bb/A# chart that leads you to believe it is notated traditionally where Ab/G# is, oh well). Yes, it takes up a few pages, but it makes it very clear and gives you something to practice rather than just a reference source.

The next set of charts help you transpose music from one instrument to another, offering common chord progressions side by side with charts for guitar, c ukulele, d ukulele and g ukulele (baritone). Useful.

Another set of charts shows clearly the concept of 8 moveable chord formations (4 major chord formations & 4 dominant 7th formations). Another useful reference.

Now that you know all the chord inversions and the various places to find all twelve notes on the fretboard, you're ready to start the process of making chord melody solos. I've often complained that certain author's 'methods' are not methodical at all, but Moore is ultra-methodical; he outlines every step of the process, really more than I needed (as a composer), but I can see the value for someone who does not have my background. Sometimes I feel things could be expedited/quickened up with the use of some traditional notation, but the chord diagramming is Moore's method and it does work to illustrate this type of soloing.

At the end, there is a nod to tablature, which I think is a less cumbersome way of notating a song without using a staff, but as I said before, you're then left without fingerings, unless you use the two together.

Anyway, I feel I got a keeper just for the awesome charts and reference materials.

Much ado about nothing

I bought this book after reading so many rave reviews about it. I really don't understand why it got so many because it is not a good book to teach anyone to play chord melody. What the book does for you however, is give you some of the best chord charts I have found. If you want to know where to find all the possibilities for chords and the fingering then this book covers more than you will ever need. The CD is useless. He rushes through every song whether it should be fast or slow and he doesn't explain anything. There is no way to keep up or even understand what he is playing because it is not in the book the way he is playing it. He doesn't explain that either. To be honest, I didn't even like his playing. Just because you can find chords all the way up and down the neck of the uke, doesn't mean you should use them. None of the songs were written so they could be played in the way I was expecting to be able to play them. What was I expecting? I was expecting to improve my ability to play song melodies using the chords and single notes on more than just the first 5 frets and to understand how to add simple embellishments where there is blank space between phrases. When to strum to maintain a rhythm, etc. I do not want to be a professional, I just want to be able to play songs that are pleasant to hear and at a decent tempo and I want to do it correctly. I have played and taught piano for 50 years I also play the hammered dulcimer and the autoharp, so I know notes and chord theory. I do not recommend this book.

great for any one learning fretted insturment

This is a great book, if your looking to learn to play a fretted instrument this is the book for you. you can use this book with banjo uke or guitar the information is all there. Although written for the uke you can use the info for other instruments as well. best instructional book I have ever purchased.

This edition of Othello is a fantastic copy. There are ample notes alongside the text, which contribute to the understanding of the play. Well spaced text, also allows for clear reading and annotation. There are also plenty of activities for both in and out of the classroom, aiding student revision and coursework. 5 star Amazon review

Another great Oxford School Edition

I performed a selection from Othello at a Shakespeare intensive this summer and tracked down many, many editions for insight into the text. The Oxford School Edition remains my favorite. The extensive footnotes are all in the margins, making it so easy to bounce between the text and the notes without loosing your place. The notes are thorough with the exception that as a student edition, it skims over the bawdier innuendo, but you can figure those out pretty easily on your own. The typography is very well done and gentle on the eyes. There are wonderful summaries of the scenes and history of the play which gives deeper insight. The punctuation is well done (some other editions go crazy with the commas) and lends itself logically to the text. I picked up a copy of Oxford School Edition's Romeo and Juliet earlier this year and loved that one. This continues the trend of excellence. I'm thoroughly impressed.

Excellent resource for the classroom

This text includes it all for both the classroom and for independent study of Shakespeare's Othello.
It provides helpful background information about the play and about the time period in which it's set. In addition, it includes photos and graphics. In the back of the book, it includes a section called, Exploring Othello in the Classroom. This is the best version I've seen as of yet and am glad I stumbled upon it!!

Book is damaged on outside and it's pretty bad condition

I don't know how to inform the vendor about the status of the book I order. The book is in bad shape but still it can be used for my class. I would like to inform the vendor about the status of the book and I don't want to get into any troubles when I return the book. I try to find the vendor details I don't see it to inform or take pictures and send it to him on the books condition.

I am bit worried if I might be charged for the book cost when I return it.

I got in to a graduate class at the last minute and needed this book immediately. I found a seller with a used copy that was very reasonably priced (for a college text book) and offered a next day delivery option. I paid the ~$18 shipping fee and to my surprise I actually had the book in hand the next day. We've been using mostly the case studies for my class. Just what I needed.

About the Author
Mr. Bodie Hodge attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and received a B.S. and M.S. in mechanical engineering. His specialty was a subset of mechanical engineering based in advanced materials processing, particularly starting powders. Currently, Bodie is a speaker, writer, and researcher for Answers in Genesis USA. He is the author of The Fall of Satan and co-author of Dragons: Legends & Lore of Dinosaurs.

Roger Patterson earned his BS Ed degree in biology from Montana State University. Before coming to work at Answers in Genesis, he taught for eight years in Wyoming’s public school system and assisted the Wyoming Department of Education in developing assessments and standards for children in public schools.

Excellent Book

It is readily accepted that Walter Martin’s classic Kingdom of the Cults is the standard work on the plethora of cult religions across the globe. While I certainly recommend Martin’s contribution to this topic, the recent multi-volume release from Master Books on World Religions and Cults is another valuable tool for understanding how to not just understand these religions and cults, but more importantly, how to respond to those who hold to those types of religious ideologies. The particular volume this review will focus upon is World Religions and Cults: Moralistic, Mythical and Mysticism Religions edited by Bodie Hodge and Roger Patterson.

Hodge aptly notes in the introduction an important truth, namely there are only two religions in the world, “God’s and man’s”. Anything not of God or found in God’s Word falls within the category of a man made religion. Hodge correctly reminds the reader these “religions of man are dubbed humanistic since they go back to the mind of man or a human. As Christians, we should not fear them.”

Since far too many believers are wholly unaware of what these man made religions teach, they are unprepared to interact from a biblical approach on the falsity of those ungodly religions ideologies. Thus, instead of reaching out with the truth of Scripture, they shrink back to their pews or homes when someone knocks on their door.

The contributors to this volume engage 21 different false religions from New Age philosophy to Unitarianism to Wicca, Witchcraft, and Druidism. Each chapter provides a short yet thorough overview of the belief in question, the arbitrariness of its teachings, important characteristics, historical development, and key ways to dialogue with those who are adherents of these religions.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the plethora of important facts provided throughout this book, what I most appreciated was the focus on evangelism. Learning about false religions is one thing. Taking that knowledge and then going forth to engage those who hold to these false beliefs with the message of the truth of God’s Word and the gospel is truly what we are all called to do by God. Fundamentally, this is an apologetics book written with a heart towards evangelism.

Many, many people are believing the lies of the 21 moralistic, mythical, and mysticism religions discussed in this book. The reality is these particular religions are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to false beliefs. As believers, we must use helpful tools such as this book to enable us to learn the elements of the error so we can preach the message of the truth found in Scripture.

I highly recommend not only this particular volume, but all three volumes that comprise this wonderful set of books provided by Master Books. If you want all three volumes, Master Books has just released all three in a handy one-volume edition. I encourage you to pick up all three and dive into the information contained in its pages. In a time when the allure of false religions is on the rise, it is high time the people of God get out of the pews, open their doors at home, and learn about what people are falling prey to while at the same time sharing the message of the gospel. World Religions and Cults: Moralistic, Mythical and Mysticism Religions is a great tool for doing just that.
