Elder's first book not up to her usual standards

After reading Evelyn Finds Herself, which most schoolgirl book fans regard as Elder's best work, I found Erica Wins Through a disappointment.
It starts with a common plot - difficult child refuses to act with any sense and is sent off to boarding school to learn to act decently and to let other girls show her how far off the mark her behavior is. Erica begins her boarding school career by alienating the popular girls and getting a bad name with her odd behavior. Even when she isn't actually being rude, she's so used to being her frank self that the others girls don't know what to make of her, so they leave her alone.
Erica's so lonely that she indulges in long imaginings about the adventures she and her brother might have gotten into in historical times, and we are "treated" to a very long chapter of imagined war-time heroics on the part of Erica and her brother. When she tells the girls about some of the things she imagines, passing them off as truth, she's easily found out as a liar and further shunned.
With the help of an older girl, she manages to begin seeing why the others girls dislike her so, and begins making friends with some straightforward girls who are unpopular but have good character. They pledge to make right in the form and change the form's priorities from silly tricks and mean-spiritedness to excelling in school and games.
I usually enjoy this kind of plot well enough, overused as it is, but the long scenes of imaginings wore me out, and Erica and her friends were either portrayed as too young or perhaps too shallow to have enough depth of character to be interesting. I put the book down a few times while reading and half-decided I no longer cared what happened, before going back and finishing it finally.
Josephine Elder's a wonderful writer, and that is why this book gets three starts instead of one. Even though I found the plot and characters kind of boring, she writing itself was as engaging as it could be.
I'd just recommend reading anything else of Elder's instead, and particularly Evelyn Finds Herself, which is easily one of my favorite GirlsOwn-type books. In that one, Evelyn finds joy through developing her talents and in examining her relationships with others, and her friendship with a young teacher helps nourish her love of science. She makes a realistic transition from high school kid to dependable young woman through the course of the book, and it filled me with a sense of wanting to do my best for the world and be the best person I can be, which is part of what I love so much about this type of book.
