Third, forest rights activists attend to individual as well as peoples' collective rights whereas approaches in other fields tend to emphasize one or the other set of rights. 

Forests and People is a timely response to the challenges that remain for advocates as new trends and initiatives, such as market-based governance, REDD, and a rush to biofuels, can sometimes seem at odds with the gains from what has been a two decade expansion of forest peoples' rights. It explores the implications of these forces, and generates new insights on forest governance for scholars and provides strategic guidance for activists.

About the Author

Thomas Sikor has conducted research on forest tenure and politics over the past two decades, including fieldwork in Vietnam, Albania, and Romania. He holds a PhD in Energy and Resources from the University of California at Berkeley and currently is Reader in International Development at the University of East Anglia. Sikor has guest-edited a number of special journal issues and books on topics ranging from community and land reform to property theory. In his activist work, he promotes the expansion of economic, political and cultural rights to disadvantaged people in Vietnam. 

Johannes Stahl works on natural resource governance and institutions in agriculture and forestry. He holds PhD and MA degrees in Agriculture and Social Anthropology and was a Ciriacy-Wantrup Postdoctoral Fellow in Natural Resource Economics and Political Economy at the University of California at Berkeley from 2007 to 2009. Stahl's research has examined forest use practices and institutions in Bolivia and Albania. He lives and works in Montreal, Canada.

Sater Design's Ultimate Home Plans Book

Form those who are familiar with Dan's work, it will be no surprise that this book is absolutely beautiful. It has over 150 home plans, many are on his earlier luxury plans book, but it seems over a third of them are new to this book. I really love the section featuring small luxury homes as I don't want a large home so much as a richly detailed one. As usual the photography is fabulous. I really am enjoying this book.

He is the author of the books Solaris Application Programming (Prentice Hall, 2008) and The Developer’s Edge (Sun Microsystems, 2009). Perfectly executed

Here is an author who is not only the consummate expert we expect when we buy such a book, but is likewise both an excellent writer and teacher. Technical material is presented in perfectly sized and easy to digest chunks, you will find no academic puffery here. Code examples are painstakingly minimal, so as to be easily and immediately grasped and to complement the text, rather than interrupt it. Would that more technical texts were presented this well, a real gem here.

Great overview of a broad topic

Browsing through this book at the local bookstore, I found it to be a suitable road map for learning how to program multicore systems. There are several topics and technologies in this subject, and the book covers them broadly. I say this because the reader has to pursue each topic in depth through other resources. These are highlighted in the references section. (For example, to learn POSIX threads programming, I've followed through by studying Robbins and Robbins' "UNIX System Programming" and Kerrisk's "The Linux Programming Interface". As both these in turn point to Butenhof's book, I'll probably follow the trail there too ...) Thorough details on such things as NPTL, to the niggler's delight, are found beyond Gove's book.

"Multicore Application Programming" is useful for the aspiring system programmer.

Very good book with an odd Solaris bias

Notice that the title contains "for Windows, Linux, and Oracle(r) Solaris" not "for Microsoft(r) Windows, Linux, and Oracle(r) Solaris". The author works for Oracle (via Sun). This results in an odd and at times distracting bias in the text. For example, in Chapter 1, the UltraSPARC T2 (aka niagara2) is used as the example modern processor instead of say the Intel CoreI7 (aka nehalem, westmere). Then there are many references to the Sun Studio compiler and specific compiler options. Yes, gcc and icc are covered although often after Sun Studio. The coverage of Oracle/Sun in this book does not match current market share, and sadly probably does not match future market share.

Bias aside, this is a very good book on practical multicore programming. Read the other two (as of this writing) reviews. They lay it on a bit thick, but I basically agree. My one gripe is that the author is overly fond of automatic parallelization and Sun Studio's autopar. Having used a Sun Fire server for years, I have tried and been underwhelmed by autopar. Anyone reading this book would not satisfied with autopar. Also, mixing automatic parallelization in the same chapter with OpenMP does OpenMP a disservice.

A must-read, if you are thinking of working on Wall St

I worked for CSFB for three years, and am still in investment banking for a smaller firm. So I have seen a part of the world that is described here. I'm not saying that this is an exact description of what I saw, because Lewis picks the most exotic creatures that he met, but the atmosphere is perfectly conveyed. This book will tell you all the stuff that they don't teach you in an interview or recruitment visit - the pecking order, the politics, and how to get paid.
The other reason to read this is that Lewis is a brilliant writer, with a real talent for describing people and their situations. Lots of other people have written boring books with the same raw material. For a non-specialist like my mother, the technicalities were hard work, but you don't need a lot of special knowledge to like this book. My mother certainly did.
Probably the best way to look at this book is like a travel book - you're not visiting a country, you're visiting a world. Great travel books are not word-perfect descriptions of a place, they are representations of what the author felt like when he was there, and they give the reader a feeling of what it was like to be there. If you read this book, you will understand what it feels like to work inside a big bank, and you'll enjoy the ride, even if you have no interest in actually working there.

One hand, one million dollars, no tears.

In the 1980's, Michael Lewis was a neophyte bond salesman for Salomon Brothers in New York and London for four years. Liar's Poker is a high-stakes game the traders, salesmen, and executives play each afternoon, but it is also a metaphor for the Salomon culture of extreme risk-taking with immediate payoffs and clear winners and losers.
This is the story of how Lewis survived the training program, inept but mean-spirited management, an aborted take-over even featuring a white knight, layoffs and the 1987 market crash before quitting to find his real calling as a business journalist. While Lewis's career did not take off quickly, he eventually became a highly paid producer, although not in the league of the true top dogs.
Lewis tells the real story of Wall Street in both go-go and crash days with self-deprecating humor enlivened with his ecletic wit. Colorful and well-known Wall Street characters appear such as Michael Milken, Lazlo Birini, Warren Buffett, Bill Simon, Sr. and John Guetfruend. All business students need to read this as even those with advanced degrees in finance such as myself, will learn how things really work. The story of how the junk bond and collateralized mortgage backed security markets emerge is told to fill in a chapter in financial history. Perhaps most interesting is some of the political machinations, rampant at Salomon, which lead for example for Salomon to ignore the junk bond market, allowing others to flourish and eventually attempt to take-over Salomon using junk bonds.
Lewis also describes for all investors the conflicts of interest and lack of governance on Wall Street long before Eliot Spitzer and Arthur Levitt became the champions of the little guy. My next step is to read Lewis's later books.

Entertaining for awhile; falls off near the end...

Liar's Poker is a funny look at life on Wall Street; especially the life of lower-level employees getting their start in the financial world. Michael Lewis uses the personal experience of his financial career in the Salomon Brothers bond program to tell the larger story of the rise and fall of the entire firm during the 1980s. Along the way he tells some funny stories and gives the reader an interesting, inside look at the fast-paced life on Wall Street. But in the end, the book starts to drag and Lewis's cynical view of the securities industry begins to get tiresome. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what a trader's life is like inside a major Wall Street firm. It is an interesting, initially humorous read that is appropriately not much longer than 200 pages in length.

HumAnimal explores the experience of dehumanization as the privation of speech. Taking up the figure of silence as the space between human and animal, it traces the potential for an alternate political and ethical way of life beyond law. Thus HumAnimal details the differences and intersections between Derrida and Agamben in their respective approaches to power, claiming that to think simultaneously within the registers of deconstruction (which conceives of power as a symptom of the metaphysics of presence) and biopolitics (which conceives of power as the operation of difference) entails a specification of the political and ethical consequences that attends the two perspectives.

When considered as the potential of language to refuse the law of signification and semantics, silence can neutralize the exercise of power through language, and Seshadri’s inquiry discloses a counterpower that does not so much oppose or destroy the politics of the subject but rather neutralizes it and renders it ineffective.

A fantastic read

Driven by fierce ethical concerns, author Kalpana Seshadri challenges the reader to understand the deprivation of speech as a political realm of dehumanization. Seshadri beckons us on from Agamben's appropriation of Aristotle to high wire artist Philippe Petit's ability to understand the sounds of birds, in order to confront us with the question of our living being. This sophisticated contribution to the philosophy of race and racism is a model of scholarly writing, and amazingly funny! Seshadri's writing style is singular. It is lyric and spry; the chapters on the Wild Child are alone worth the price of admission. HumAnimal is a brilliant book. I have never read one quite like it.

Yes, I agree with the prior reviewer: this is a fabulous book about race. I'm still thinking through whether I'm going to take the entire journey with Seshadri, whether I'll go all of the way with her. But make no mistake, this is a book to be reckoned with for its thinking at the intersection of modernity's racial imaginary, the implication of language in that imaginary, and the possibilities of silence—and Seshadri means something quite specific by this—as a mode of insovereign or fugitive escape. And again, I concur with the previous reviewer that the stuff on the wild child, which is all bound up with what I'm here terming fugitivity, is amazing and alone worth the book. I read this book as a subtle critique of modern sovereignty and the formation of the sovereign as bound up with the law (of race and language).

Very YA High School level

3 stars rating from me because I dislike when the description is lacking. It should have stated the fact of a few things. Child abuse, high school romance etc.

I probably wouldn't have read it if I had known the ages of the couple, a little too young for me and I love more spice. The author should have given us more information about the read. I love giving an author a chance when I see no one has reviewed their story. Please in the future give a full honest description so you receive better reviews.

best book ever

I first found this book online and started reading it and from the moment I started it I was captivated! It is an aweome book tht keeps you hooked from start to finish and is one of my go to books that I can read over and over again. Her characters are very well done and you cant help but fall in love with them, thus it's one of the best books ever!
