about the scanned-OCR-edition

I would like to write about the text of the paperback, not on the content: this is an edition of GeneralBooks who scanned the original book (that is available in pdf for the buyers - fortunately), passed it through OCR, and printed what came out. NO checking and NO formatting was done on the text. Even the exising formatting is often missing (footnotes follow mostly continously in the same row (!) the text of one-one page), titles may miss on the beginning of chapters, one part of the content disappeared (I am not even aware of OCR to do that!). Without the original scanned book, it is impossible to read. I wonder how much it would have added to the present price to just check for formatting and separating text from footnotes, nothing more. As it is now, I would not recommend it at all, but only to buy the pdf, and print it out at home. The present state of the book is simply inacceptable.

I found it a great deal less even handed than I would have expected

I found this book when as I was been exploring the filioque clause and things related to it. In short it was not what I was expecting. Probably the first half of the book, as he speaks about the undivided Church was helpful and covered lots of ground. For me the book fell apart somewhere between 1014 and 1054. I found it a great deal less even handed than I would have expected. I probably hadn't looked at the date of authorship till that point, and perhaps that accounts for some of it. What does become clear to a 21st century western mind is that the questions of primacy and power, hierarchy and council have been some of the worst features of Church life.

Not for the uninitiated

Pelikan is a challenge to read, because he allows the arguments of history to remain as complex as they were when they were raging.

But he does give a good feel for the spirit that formed the Orthodox Church as it exists today. It is treated objectively, and I suppose sympathetically. (I'm told he converted to Orthodoxy before he died).

Less complex discussions of Orthodoxy exist, especially Timothy Ware's books. There is also a very nice issue of Christian History magazine that gives a good overview.

This is the most serious discussion of Orthodox doctrine that I have seen.

needed this!

This book really gave me hope for healing. I'm only 24 but I've gone through some hard times and I really didn't know how to deal with the issues. I'm at an age where I have so much opportunity but those issues really have weighed down on me to the point where I have been stuck! Your words really make me want to face all of my problems and really reflect on that hurtful past and grow from it. Thank you so much! Everyone should read this book! Can't wait until the next one!

Life Changing

This book stopped me dead in my tracks after reading it on the bus one morning. I finished the whole book in 2 hours and was moved to my core! The book wakes your spirit up by challenging you to poke at the negative energy until it is unsettled and removed. Not only did I read it then, I started to journal my prayers in the journal pages provided. By doing so, to date, I have been able to reinforce all the positive vibes that have come my way and keep my head high! Great book

If your anything like me, you have a big heart and care about children more than words can describe, you probably need a box of tissues and plenty of time to read. Once I started reading this I couldn't put it down and I cried more than once throughout the book.
If you can't decide if you want to read this or not then I suggest you do. You wouldn't have questioned it and read this far unless you are interested and that is all I need to know to recommend you read this.

I did not think this woman had an self pity. When you go through something as bad as she did. It's okay to be selfish, but I did not see that. Beware this book is graphic. There were times when I had to put it down but I had to know how she got out okay.

The most disturbing, horrific and heart wrenching biography of child abuse I have ever read. My heart goes out to Victoria and her siblings, and to all the other children out there who have similar experiences.
It has re-enforced my desire to become a foster parent, so that I can help a child learn to be loved, and safe. It has raised my awareness of the secrecy that offenders can enforce on a child, and hopefully makes me more vigilant in seeing the tell tale signs of abuse.

To Victoria: I am amazed at how you have pulled through your experiences, you are truly a remarkable woman, I have great respect for you and even though you do not know who I am, know that through your story you have touched my heart and I will always think of you and wish you only the utmost happiness for the rest of your days.

Mother Myrtle's Healing Work Through Letters

Myrtle Fillmore, the mother of the Unity New Thought Movement began her adult life as an itenerate teacher just after the civil war. Later she met and married Charles Fillmore who co-founded the movement with her. Her spiritual awakening was launched by a spontaneous healing from TB after hearing an inspirational speaker named EB Weeks. She developed a system of positive body talk which affirmed health and denied the power of disease to effect the body. She spent her entire lifetime performing one on one personal healings using prayer treatments which included this positive body talk techique. The book is a collection of letters she wrote in response to requests for healing from all over the counrty. She had much confirmed success with long distance prayer treatments and developed a grateful following all over the country. As Charles Fillmore is consider the "head" of the Unity Thought System, Myrtle has always been known as the "heart."

Inspirational writings for those in need of healing

I am not a Christian. It took me some work to get past my bias against the use of religious language. But once I did, I found the writing very comforting and inspirational. In fact, its the personal relationship that Jesus provides to the reader that empowers the positive thinking or faith that facilitates the healing. This book is small, but the author packs a lot of wise counsel in it. I would recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with health issues and not turned off by Christianity.

Jeffrey A. Bader is a visiting scholar with the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution. He returned to Brookings after serving in the Obama administration as senior director for East Asian affairs on the National Security Council from January 2009 to April 2011. Before his appointment to the Obama administration, Bader was the first director of the John L. Thornton China Center at Brookings, where he was also a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy program. The main geostrategic challenge facing Asia--as well as the U.S. presence there--has been the extraordinary rise of China in the past decade. In Obama and China's Rise, Jeffrey Bader, a veteran diplomat of over 30 years, recounts his experiences working for Obama's presidential campaign and serving as the senior director for East Asian affairs on Obama's National Security Council from January 2009 to April 2011.

Bader starts off outlining the Obama administration's seven major goals in Asia: 1) rebalance U.S. global priorities with greater attention paid to Asia, 2) promote a stable relationship and closer cooperation with China on international issues, 3) work towards complete denuclearization in North Korea through bilateral or multilateral negotiations, 4) strengthen and participate in Asian regional institutions, 5) strengthen alliances and partnerships--especially with Japan, South Korea, India, Indonesia, and Australia, 6) maintain forward deployment of U.S. armed forces in the region, and 7) negotiate agreements to expand trade and exports to the region.

The Obama team was fully aware of the importance of maintaining a stable and functional relationship with China. From the 2008 campaign on, the administration was careful not to label China as the bogeyman of all America's ailments.

The book is organized around three phases of major U.S.-China interactions that occurred during Bader's tenure at the National Security Council. The first stage was to lay the groundwork for a stable and healthy bilateral relationship. On April 1, 2009, President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao announced the establishment of the Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED), which would provide a platform for a dozen officials from each side to meet annually. This mechanism is unprecedented in U.S. relations with any other country in the world, which indicates the paramount importance the Obama administration attached to China. The first phase also involved Obama's first trip to China, close cooperation on North Korea and Iran, parallel implementation of economic stimulus packages, and some limited cooperation at the Copenhagen Climate Conference.

Despite this progress, the Obama administration has faced a China more assertive than at any other time in recent memory. This was especially true in 2010, a year defined by Chinese assertiveness and the second phase of Obama's dealings with China. In 2010, Chinese policy tilted toward sheltering North Korea from international sanctions. The Chinese also excluded the United States from military activities in the Yellow Sea and engaged in an overt confrontation with Japan after the collision of a Chinese fishing boat with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol boats in disputed waters near the Senkaku Islands--with the latter leading to a temporary freeze on Chinese rare earth exports to Japan. China also threatened to halt imports from companies that engaged in arms sales to Taiwan, a pointed jab at U.S. weapons sales to the country. Perhaps most significantly, China aggressively expanded its claims on the South China Sea.

The Obama administration reacted by signaling to China that assertiveness would only make China lose critical economic partners. Yet even as the United States acknowledged the inevitability of China's rise, Bader summarizes that the Obama administration pragmatically "sought to ensure that China's rise served to stabilize, not destabilize, the Asia-Pacific region, which included five U.S. allies and other partners in whose security Americans had an interest."

In light of this, the Obama administration reasserted U.S. interests in the South China Sea and reiterated America's commitment to Japan's security, even while remaining ostensibly neutral on the question of the Senkaku Islands. Bader believes that China clumsily alienated its partners in the region, yet its foreign policy analysts confused cause and effect and blamed the United States for the deterioration in China's relations with its neighbors. Bader writes that by the end of 2010, China had begun to rethink its assertive posturing.

Bader suggests that it was not until early 2011, when Hu Jintao visited the United States, that U.S.-China bilateral relations began to get back on track, opening up what Bader considers the third stage, which has been marked by continued progress on security issues and greater emphasis on bilateral and global economic issues as China approaches its once-a-decade leadership transition.

According to Bader's assessment, the Obama administration managed the key issues in the bilateral relationship quite well, making important progress on Iran, climate change, North Korea, and the world economy. Although Bader supports the administration's "strategic pivot" to East Asia, he believes the term is a misnomer that over-militarizes the actual implications of the policy. The net U.S. military presence is not going to increase except with the deployment of 2,500 U.S. Marines to Darwin, Australia. What better characterizes the dynamic, Bader argues, quoting National Security Adviser Thomas Donilon, is a "rebalancing of U.S. priorities toward the Asia-Pacific."

Obama and China's Rise is the first account of Asia policy-making in the Obama administration written by someone who was part of the effort. Bader's account captures the details while contextualizing them in the larger picture. However, Bader's account does not reveal much about the disagreements among various policymakers about how best to deal with China and Asia at large, nor about how the administration decided on which strategy to pursue. Obama and China's Rise is a fine account of what the administration did, but is less suitable for those curious about why.

Informative but Sounds Like a Campaign Ad

This is an educational piece by Jeffrey Bader that provides a brief recap of the diplomatic encounters between the US and China during President Barack Obama's first term. Bader's text provides a humble yet subjective account of the Obama Administration. The author is careful not to make assumptions about situations that he did not experience firsthand however, he portrays everything in a tone that seems to glorify the administration to a point beyond the ability to be criticized in any way. This book is filled with the outcome of events but does not give any insight as to the process by which the final decisions were made and why.

Literally the worst book ever written. Do yourself a favor and withdrawal yourself from the class if your professor is idiotic enough to require you to read this. I used it to start a fire the day I finished it.

Manages to hook together several ethnographic schools.

I found Tsing's book to be very informative about the Meratus culture of Indonesia, as well as very pertinent to the recent battling between the postmodernist and femminist thought schools within ethnographic literature. She manages to use a combination of more traditional Enlightment techniques (statistics, generalizations, strong authoratative voice) as well as postmodernist techniques (polyvocality, poetry, socio-historical context for the culture, relativism to its surroundings). The reading is easy, and fun, because she puts a bit of emotion in her book too. Overall, I think it is an important contribution to the ethnographic literary circle.

Marine Aviation Squadron History

Mike Crowder has written the 2d volume of what may end up being a long string of books on Marine and Navy aviation squadron histories. Vol 1, now out of print, covered Marine fighter squadrons (VMF and VMFA) while this effort deals with attack (VMA) units and their WWII predecessors (VMB, VMSB, VMTB). The author understands the arcane terminology of the service, where units are "Activated" and "Deactivated" and not "Commissioned" and "Decommissioned"; two terms that don't apply. Each unit is covered in narrative fashion with a wonderful selection of squadron patches and insignia provided as well; much of which came from the late (and remarkable) "Mule" Holmberg's collection. Production quality is very good; exactly what you'd expect from publisher Schiffer. Personally I would've preferred to see Marine units listed sequentially by number as some famous attack units (like VMA-121) are in Vol1 because in their latest form (VMFA-AW-121 in this case); which leads to some confusion. That being said, this is a nice book; we look forward to further volumes.
