Interesting and disturbing

I'm not sure quite how to review this book- it got under my skin a bit and that's kind of hard to get over. I struggled to get through it wondering if it should be considered blasphemy or not.
The premise of the book is that Mack, the main character, struggles after his youngest daughter is kidnapped, abused, and assumed dead. She was taken to a shack found deep in the woods where they found her blood and dress but not her body. Mack deals with deep depression (understandably so) after the event. Then one day he is given a note from God to visit Him in the shack. As the book unfolds, Mack describes in detail his experience in the shack with God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. My issues with the book are all doctrinal - I know God has a body and He does not take on whatever form suits Him in the moment. The initial physical representation of God was extremely disturbing for me and irritated me to the point of putting the book down for a time. The words that came from God and Jesus were not in line with what the Scriptures teach us and that bugged me too. I felt like there were some good messages here and there as Mack struggled to forgive God and trust in Him again, but there were so many things that went against my beliefs that I found the good messages lost in the sea of borderline blasphemy. Yes I know this is a book of fiction, but I still think that the "teachings" of this book are inaccurate.

Especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, but doesn't replace actual disciplined study of the bible

This is an allegory about the nature of God and His relationship to Man, similar in kind to “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. As with all allegories, it can enlighten truths in a short paragraph that may not be understood in a long chapter of theology. Unfortunately, allegories also have the weakness of being like a “graphic novel” compared to a true novel, simplifying or paraphrasing original material (in this case, the Bible) to the point of distortion.

Things I Liked:
- The depiction of the Trinity as a joyful internal relationship of love, which God desires to share with us.
- The deep love of God for Man (with love manifest differently through each of the Trinity), full of sacrifice and joy, without condemnation.
- A reasonably engaging plot to explore the topics.

Things I Didn’t Like:
- The “romping” good humor of the Trinity for each other and Man was over the top for me. There was no room for “Fear of the Lord” in this story, at all.
- No real iscussion of hell, except to say God wants us all to be with Him.
- Some minor eco-babble, man-bashing, use of the math concept of “fractals”, etc. were annoying.
- Some, mostly minor, points of theology were just wrong in my opinion.

I think this book would be especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, or for those that carry anger/resentments for wrongs done to them. So, this book can take its place with other recent Christian-pop books like “Wild at Heart” and “A Purpose-Driven Life” that have proven meaningful to some. Just don’t make the mistake that it replaces more disciplined study of the scriptures and serious books of theology that illuminate a greater portion of the Word. If asked to defend your faith, or wondering yourself wht the scriptures say about a topic, you can’t say, “I read something about that in ‘The Shack!’” On the other hand, allegories are the equivalent to parables, and we know Someone that was pretty effective in using those to teach deep concepts through illustrations.

Gut wrenching storyline

Spoiler alert: A lot of people really love this book. It was well written & the author went into great detail to explain his perception of God. If you believe in an invisible force that contains pure love, does not judge & only wants your love in return, then this book is for you. It seems I am not there yet. I could not get past the death of an innocent child at the hands of a serial killer even though the main character is released from the great sadness of losing his previous child by forgiving her killer. I was depressed for days after reading this story. I understand the concept that forgiveness can release victims from the negative emotional attachment to their agressors. Maybe if I also had the experience of actually meeting God in his three forms in person, I too would come to understand more fully the meaning of unconditional love. In the meantime, I will continue living my life by being as kind as I can be to all I meet. However, if I were to meet anyone abusing a child, I might just feel the need to kick them in their private area, then call the police.

fascinating read - raises questions on Scofield's legacy & addresses theological concerns

"The Praise of Folly: The Enigmatic Life and Theology of C.I. Scofield" is a title that may raise some eyebrows. Scofield, of course, is most famous for his Scofield Reference Bible, with its doctrinal notes.

The book is a fascinating read, no matter what side of the dispensational-covenantal divide you find yourself on. Lutzweiler presents a well-researched, historical account of Scofield's life, and sprinkles in some thoughts on the rise of dispensationalism and its deficiencies as a theological system, to boot.

At times, I felt that Lutzweiler may have been encouraging his readers to jump to conclusions too quickly. And it is also quite true that even if Scofield is shown to be a dishonorable man, in certain respects (such as his treatment of his ex-wife and his children), still that should not necessarily invalidate the teaching of dispensationalism. Still at the end of the day, I think Lutzweiler's depiction of Scofield and the history of the Plymouth Brethren movement should give a reason to pause in one's evaluation of dispensational theology. A modernistic, self-centered, everyone-can-do-their-own-theology may be behind the rise of this system of thought. And while ultimately the arguments have to go to Scripture, this nevertheless weakens the dispensational claims to historic support for their particular doctrinal emphases.

In any case, this book by Lutzweiler deserves to be read and considered. Note: there is also a DVD available based on this book: "C I Scofield: The Man, The Myth", also from Apologetics Media.

The best there is on this subject, but...

Cyrus I. Scofield is a mysterious figure. Despite his influence in the Christian world, the definitive biography of Scofield remains to be written - even after Lutzweiler's well-written and well-researched book. 'The Praise of Folly' represents the best work presently available on C.I. Scofield. This is not, however, an ordinary biography; Scofield made his name as the popularizer of a particular theology, that of Dispensationalism, and therefore any treatment of Scofield has to deal with his theology. Lutzweiler is openly critical of Dispensational theology, but for the most part he is able to differentiate between the man and his theology.

Lutzweiler has carefully researched the life of Scofield, and he has managed to fill in the 'missing years' between Scofield's resignation in disgrace from his post of District Attorney and his conversion. For this he ought to be thanked. Scofield was a complicated man, and his life includes a number of embarrassing factors, including the awkard question of where he got his 'D.D.', and why he did not properly provide for the children of his first marriage.

This is a book that rewards reading, though it does fall into the trap of conspiracy theories once or twice, despite attempts to avoid that pitfall. Perhaps also it will inspire the definitive biography that still waits to be written.

Folly foolishly presented

This personal critique masquerading as biography provides a good deal of helpful information about attempts of Scofield and his supporters to obfuscate Scofield's less-than-inspiring career. But Lutzweiler presents the material in such a disjointed manner that any serious student will be disappointed, if not totally frustrated. Lutzweiler's discussion of Scofield's theology is surprisingly limited, presumably because he believes readers already hold anti-dispensational views. Furthermore, the index is totally inaccurate; in fact, it is the most careless piece of work I've come across in a lifetime of reading. Certainly someone might taken the time to have checked a few citations before publication.

Great Book On How to Draw Fantasy Style Creatures.

I haven't written a review in a long time, but I feel that I have to put things straight from the first reviewer. Mr. O'Connor is a fantasy artist, not a Paleoartist. The purpose of his books is to show people the process of creating a fantasy style drawing from initial pencils, to coloring, rendering, and shading, using a computer program like Photoshop Suite. Taken for this process, this is an excellent book, much like his other fantasy art books that preceded it. It should not be taken as a correct anatomical guide any more than a comic book art book should. This is a great book for creating good looking fantasy style drawings of dinosaurs, which techniques can also be used for other fantasy animals as well. If you are looking for a book for these reasons, I would highly recommend this book.

Buyer Beware! This book is not by a professional Dinosaur artist!

I wanted to post a review of this book, even though I have only looked at the preview. I do this for one reason only, this book makes itself out to be a guide about drawing dinosaurs, by a professional, when the artist is clearly not a professional paleontology illustrator.

The drawings are not anatomically accurate, nor do they contain certain anatomical details that characterise each animal. The Ankylosaurus is simply drawn as a generic Ankylosaur, based mainly on a generic and inaccurate toy that the artist bought. The Diplodocus is painful to look at, in that the foot is drawn completely wrong, even having an extra joint where there is none (obviously the artist was drawing inspiration too heavily from hoofed mammals).

The fact that all other books authored and drawn by this artist are about dragons should be indication enough that we are dealing with a fantasy artist, and not a professional science illustrator. His dragon books are nice, I have all 3, but he still uses some classic mistakes in anatomy that do not make a lick of sense. Clearly O'Connor is an artist that draws based on gestural and shape-based guidelines, not purely anatomical ones, otherwise he would not make such obvious blunders.

I make a point of these criticisms because hacks like these make life harder for professional dinosaur and paleo illustrators, by filling the market with art that looks pretty, but lacks the life-like substance and accuracy that dinosaur reconstructions should always have. O'Connor has technical and practical skill, and is a great fantasy artist, but he is very poor at drawing science subjects, as you will plainly see if you buy this book.

(If you want great anatomical creature fantasy art, Terryl Whitlatch is a must, for Paleontology art that is actually good, I recommend Mark Hallet, William Stout, John Conway, Julius Csotonyi etc).

Transformational and Eye-Opening!

I recently discovered Joyce Meyer Ministries a couple of months ago and her teaching is making such a difference in my life! Before this book, I bought one of her other books called Battlefield of the Mind and it is helping me in tremendous ways! I definitely recommend anything you can get by Joyce Meyer because it will truly impact your life in a positive way! I was so excited to hear about this book because this is one area I have trouble with, especially when I wake up in the morning and it's overcast or rainy or I'm exhausted--it's hard to ignore and rise above the negative feelings that usually come along with those things. I have started reading this book and it's amazing! I definitely want to learn how I can control the emotions that come and not let them ruin my day or dictate my attitude! I highly recommend this book! Who would have thought we actually have control over our emotions?! Also, I highly recommend her teaching called "The Power of Words: What You Say Can Make All the Difference." This is extremely helpful as well!!

A Textbook on Controlling Your Emotions!

Joyce Meyer's newest book, Living Beyond Your Feelings - Controlling Your Emotions So They Don't Control You is a book I have needed to read for a long time. This book discusses many different emotional states and how our minds react to those emotions. She explains how we can manage our emotions in different situations so that they don't control us.

I know for myself, I allow my emotions to have a hold on me, especially stress. When I'm stressed my body reacts in many different ways. I felt Joyce gave me a 'pep talk' on how I need to change the way I react to the stressful things in my life.

Throughout the book, Joyce helps you to understand some of your feelings and explains how God has supplied us with what we need to keep our emotions from controlling our life. But we must ask God for His help in our emotional situations. She makes it a point to let the reader know that if they cannot get their emotions under control then their emotions will take control of them.

At the beginning of the book there was a quote that really struck me. The quote is from Jonatan Martensson and it says, "Feelings are much like waves, we can't stop them from coming, but we can choose which one to surf."

I really enjoyed this book and plan to reading it again and again as needed. I would recommend it to anyone interested in getting their emotions under control.

Don't let your feelings have a vote!

Is your day determined by how you feel when you wake up in the morning? In Joyce Meyer's new book, she encourages people to not let feelings determine if it will be a good day or a bad day. Talking about how you feel increases the intensity of those feelings. Very simply, speak negative things and you'll feel worse. Talk positively and you'll feel better. Although it's okay to talk with others about our concerns, nothing good comes from constantly complaining.

Meyer also warns people against allowing feelings to influence behavior. Wise choices can be difficult to make at times, especially when we are stressed or angry, but thinking long-term and looking at our desired outcome will help us do the right thing. Don't get caught up in how you feel in the moment. Think before doing or speaking. In other words, don't let your feelings have a vote!

Regardless of one's religious beliefs, there is wisdom in the author's words that benefit everyone. We live in a culture where emphasis is placed on our outward appearance. However, what really matters is what's inside and we all need probably need to spend more time working that rather than being overly focused on outward appearances.

a good scholarly examination of Gardner's Wiccan roots

Philip Heselton's book "Wiccan Roots: Gerald Gardner and the Modern Witchcraft Revival" should be recommended along with Ronald Hutton's "The Triumph of the Moon" as a solid, scholarly examination of the roots of modern Wicca.
Heselton doesn't deal in unsupported claims about Wiccan history as far too many other Wiccan writers do. He sticks to the facts, and presents the results of his research in a clear, easy-to-read manner.
Like any good researcher, Heselton raises many new questions that need addressing while clearing up longstanding misunderstandings. The author doesn't pretend to have the definitive answer about whether Gardner really was just passing on an existing tradition or was instead inspired to put together the religion now known as Wicca.
Hesleton provides compelling evidence for the existence of a group of self-described witches who did in fact perform an initiation on Gardner, thus giving him a formal introduction to witchcraft. What remains to be determined, though, is whether what that group of witches practiced was anything like Gardnerian Wicca, and whether they did in fact have any sort of established pagan "tradition" which they passed on to him, rather than just a mishmash of occult and pagan lore.
Heselton has done the Wiccan community a great service. His book should be an excellent starting point, along with Ronald Hutton's "The Triumph of the Moon," into further scholarly research about our pagan past

Most Comprehensive Research on Gerald Gardner Yet

This book focuses on Gerald Gardner and his web of contacts woven in its entirety.
Compiled by perhaps the most authoritative researcher on Gardner to date Philip Heselton, the text is bound with wonderful illustration from the personal journals of Gardner's associates, including extracts and photos from the previously unseen Boscastle archives, providing the most compelling evidence of Gardner's connections with 'Old Dorothy', his High Priestess 'Dafo', and involvement with the New Forest Coven in repelling the threatened WWII Nazi invasion of the United Kingdom.
It is immediately apparent the author has not only researched current knowledge to its furthest conclusion but has also taken the brave step of educated speculation on other associations, which is sure to provide further researchers with useful data.
One for any student into the roots of modern Paganism and the Wiccan religion - Excellent.

Essential Reading in the History of Wicca

This book, along with Hutton's _Triumph of the Moon_, is essential reading for anyone interested in an accurate history of Wicca. Heselton provides solid evidence of the people and places behind Gardner's discovery / invention of Wicca, offers his well-measured conjectures, and fills some of the gaps Hutton alludes to in his work. For those of us interested in the history of the Craft, a very, VERY important little book.

This covers very basic flat presentations - floor plans, elevations, and sections. There is nothing about drawing a room in perspective.

It's good at what it covers but as others have said, it's very basic.
