Great Book On How to Draw Fantasy Style Creatures.

I haven't written a review in a long time, but I feel that I have to put things straight from the first reviewer. Mr. O'Connor is a fantasy artist, not a Paleoartist. The purpose of his books is to show people the process of creating a fantasy style drawing from initial pencils, to coloring, rendering, and shading, using a computer program like Photoshop Suite. Taken for this process, this is an excellent book, much like his other fantasy art books that preceded it. It should not be taken as a correct anatomical guide any more than a comic book art book should. This is a great book for creating good looking fantasy style drawings of dinosaurs, which techniques can also be used for other fantasy animals as well. If you are looking for a book for these reasons, I would highly recommend this book.

Buyer Beware! This book is not by a professional Dinosaur artist!

I wanted to post a review of this book, even though I have only looked at the preview. I do this for one reason only, this book makes itself out to be a guide about drawing dinosaurs, by a professional, when the artist is clearly not a professional paleontology illustrator.
The drawings are not anatomically accurate, nor do they contain certain anatomical details that characterise each animal. The Ankylosaurus is simply drawn as a generic Ankylosaur, based mainly on a generic and inaccurate toy that the artist bought. The Diplodocus is painful to look at, in that the foot is drawn completely wrong, even having an extra joint where there is none (obviously the artist was drawing inspiration too heavily from hoofed mammals).
The fact that all other books authored and drawn by this artist are about dragons should be indication enough that we are dealing with a fantasy artist, and not a professional science illustrator. His dragon books are nice, I have all 3, but he still uses some classic mistakes in anatomy that do not make a lick of sense. Clearly O'Connor is an artist that draws based on gestural and shape-based guidelines, not purely anatomical ones, otherwise he would not make such obvious blunders.
I make a point of these criticisms because hacks like these make life harder for professional dinosaur and paleo illustrators, by filling the market with art that looks pretty, but lacks the life-like substance and accuracy that dinosaur reconstructions should always have. O'Connor has technical and practical skill, and is a great fantasy artist, but he is very poor at drawing science subjects, as you will plainly see if you buy this book.
AVOID AVOID AVOID
(If you want great anatomical creature fantasy art, Terryl Whitlatch is a must, for Paleontology art that is actually good, I recommend Mark Hallet, William Stout, John Conway, Julius Csotonyi etc).
