The Extincts, by Veronica Cossanteli

George is looking for a job in order to raise money for a new bike, so when he sees a help wanted ad for Wormestall Farm, he goes for it. Before long, he's embroiled in a madcap adventure involving creatures both (supposedly) extinct and (previously thought to be) mythological, a new friend (a girl!), and a maniacal taxidermist who wants the animals of Wormestall Farm in her own private collection . . . stuffed, of course.

Gr 4–8—After seeing a "Help Wanted" sign, which advertises for "The Right Person" and "No Squamophobes," George Drake decides to apply for a position at Wormestall Farm. During his first visit to the farm, George successfully traps a Triassic period mammal, battles a kraken while on the toilet, and, ultimately, lands the job. As with ordinary farms, the animals at Wormestall require feeding, cleaning, and overall care. Unlike ordinary farms, Wormestall houses extinct, imaginary, and extraordinary animals. Just as George's adventure at Wormestall begins, odd things start to happen around town. Small pets are disappearing, and rumors fly about the "Squermington Wyrm," a raucous, meat-eating monster. George must use his newly discovered animal-rearing skills to solve the mystery and discover what and who are worth fighting for. Cossanteli creates a fantastical adventure of mystery and imagination, set in our own backyard. She uses our fascination with dodos, unicorns, dragons, and more, as she moves them from dreams to reality. The Extincts pushes readers to heighten their imaginations, provoking inquiry about these intriguing creatures, and leaves them to ponder such details as the composition of a unicorn's diet. Cossanteli's amusingly odd characters work to create interest, yet at times seem over-the-top. The quirky language and British-style vocabulary match the tone of the book yet disrupt fluency and may be challenging for some students. VERDICT With an appealing subject matter, The Extincts is a weird, highly imaginative adventure that will entice readers with its theme of animal conservation, which rings loudly in today's society. Recommended for school libraries.—Mary-Brook J. Townsend, Episcopal Collegiate School Library, Little Rock, AK

Loved this book. Quirky and fun just like all good middle grade books should be. More, please.

but in the best of ways
By Anyta Sunday
What can I say? Reading this to my son was such a pleasure!

So in short, the book is about and a boy and his (sort-of) friend battling to save a farm of (not so) extinct animals from his friend's crazy taxidermist step mother, who needs to stuff the ultimate animal in order to win the Golden Brain Spoon.

Sound weird? Well it is, but in the best of ways!

Actually, it's about the best Middle Grade novel I've read to my son all year--full of adventure and British wit, and a dash of rawness that grounds this adventure story in reality. It was wonderful the way this author so gently touched on the difficulties of singlemother-hood and struggling financially and the distant father all the while crafting a colorful, funny, story that kids would (and in the case of my son, did) eat up!

Enjoyed!

Big Hit with Middle Grade Readers
By Heather Brown
The Extincts will be a big hit with middle grade readers and anyone looking for a funny adventure story.
After George loses his bike outside of a shop, he needs a job to buy another one. It looks like a perfect opportunity when he sees a help-wanted notice for Wormestall Farm. But there aren't ordinary animals at Wormestall Farm; with aurochs instead of cows, a unicorn in the paddock, and a mini-kraken in the bathroom, George will have to keep his wits about him. When his friend's stepmother decides that these special animals need to become a part of her taxidermied menagerie, George will have to become a hero and protect them all.
