Same great book, fabulous new look!
By cavenoid
This beloved book has been through a number of incarnations and a few updates and is now ready to hit the big time! Want to read more reviews? Look in other editions. MMM was first published in 1977 and that edition is here: Mouse, the Monster and Me - more recently it was 'rescued' by Uplift Press (which used an online publisher that was bought by another so there are a few editions) - and those reviews are here: The Mouse, the Monster and Me: Assertiveness for Young People. One of these editions is currently rated # 12 in books about bullying - but they all may be competing against each other at this point. I hope more people find out about this book; the new edition is truly great, and the new pictures are spot-on, engaging and adorable, with lots of diversity in the images of kids, and a nice retro 1970s feel. The text is easier to read, though it keeps the hand-lettered feel of the old version (which some people loved but others were turned off by). There are tons more reviews of this and the equally wonderful and beautifully updated companion book, Liking Myself, at [...] .

An awesome way to start profound conversations with a child!
By Math Mom
This is a great book. It begins by explaining the terms "mouse" and "monster" as used in the book. Then, it lays a simple, strong, secular philosophical foundation about strengths, the power of choice, rights and responsibilities. The remaining chapters are about interactions with others: Saying "no" (which is always nontrivial fro children), choosing how to react to criticism, and choosing how to react to compliments. Then, it concludes with a chapter on the freedom that comes with being assertive and responsible: being yourself!
Overall, the explanations are short and sweet—just enough for my six-year-old, but sometimes they could use more explanation. The activities are great! They started many wonderful, profound, productive conversations with my daughter. I sort of wish it had more vocabulary than just "monster" and "mouse". After all, if another child is being aggressive, I'd rather my child didn't say, "You are being a monster." Since it might sound like name-calling. So I've taught my child the words "aggressive" and "passive" in addition to "assertive". Between us, though, if she demands something in a too-agressive way I can say, "Sweetie, that's how a monster would ask for a glass of milk, how can you ask assertively?" and she understands what I mean. Likewise if she's moping around hinting that she wants to do something I can say, "I keep hearing a little mouse squeaking. Can you tell me assertively what the mouse wants?"
Part of the reason why I bought it is because my daughter needed to learn to be assertive and needed to understand what were acceptable ways for other people to treat her and what were not (there are so many "bossy" kids at school that aggressiveness seems normal to her). The philosophical foundation of this book has provided that and we are developing that foundation every day.
Honestly, I learned a lot from this book too. My parents never really taught me about assertiveness, so I'm...immature in this dimension. I wish there were a companion book for parents: "The Mouse, the Monster, and Us: Assertive Parenting to Raise Assertive Children." The front matter of the book makes some recommendations, but through this book, the author feels like a trustworthy old friend whose advice I would actively seek out. I guess I'll go check out her author page now!

I am an elementary school counselor plan to use this book with second through fifth graders as well as reading it to my own children. So excited to have found it!
