Real world of student's minds

Always seems a bit arrogant when one claims to know "the real world of kid's minds." Also worth mentioning that "Understanding by Design" is really a modest variation of the behavioral approach to educational planning. That is: figure out what you can and will test for and then design instruction. "Course Design" proceeds from considerations of content and learners. Assessment is not the first consideration in the planning process. "Course Design" does incorporate brainstorming but the brainstorming is based on substantial content knowledge and grapples with what it means to understand content. Thus it is a book best used in planning to teach content area courses and units rather than skills. The real world of human minds is a world of ideas. Teachers need to grapple with issues that center on what ideas have power for their students, how do students learn and what does this suggest for how they might best be engaged in the teaching learning process. No book on how to "do" educational planning is perfect. I'd like teachers to have a book that engages them with substantial issues of content and what it means to understand rather than working backwards from "how am I going to test this stuff."

Difficult to Read

This book is organized really well, and provides a "map" at the beginning of each chapter as a visual for what the chapter discusses. However, font is really small, and the text is very "wordy." It is difficult to read and remember what they're talking about. It provides step by step instructions for designing a course, but each step is WAY to long. Would NOT recommend.

Read anything you can by Dominican Priest, Fr. Jacques Jomier. There is no better introduction to the Qur'an in English. The Bible and the Qur'an is the best book. The results are surprising, deeply disturbing and yet offer hope infinite. For any Christian who dismisses the significance of Mary!!!!!!! The truth of what Fr. Jomier reports to us is staggering yet most Catholic priests are probably ignorant. The entrance to the bridge we are accessed to is in fact much, much more narrow than the proverbial 'eye of a needle'. This book is for Christians and others seeking to understand the Qur'an and its people. It is written from the point of view of creating credibiliy with Islam in the hope of honest and sincere dialog. Compare this point of view with the Muslims who fear dialog because it may lead them more completely to Jesus and the truth.

Not what i expected

When i ordered this book i was hoping to find a book that would be more helpful in my own creation of a warrior robot. This book contained more information that seems like it should be obvious such as getting a good team together. Their was very little actual useful information when it comes to the actual engineering of a warrior robot which, based on the title, seems like it would be the actual focus of the book. Overall i was incredibly disappointed with this book.

Very Shallow Coverage.

This book has the feel of something that was dashed off in a few weeks to meet a publishing deadline. The photos poorly illustrate the text, and many of the photos are inexplicably re-used at multiple points in the book -- apparently just as 'filler'.

The text does cover some of the basic questions a robot builder might pose, but there certainly is not enough detail to enable someone to actually construct a sucessful combat robot.

There are many better books available on this subject. Search them out and add them to your library before you consider this purchase.

About the Author

Eric Odoux graduated in biochemistry and had a career in Cirad (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development) since 1988. He successively worked on coffee, cocoa, aromatic plants and tropical fruits processing in Cameroun (and other West Africa Countries) and in France before to develop a research project on vanilla curing in 1996 in Reunion Island and Madagascar. His main research axis has focused on vanilla aroma development related to curing practices. He received his PhD degree in Food Sciences from University of Montpellier II (France) in 2004. His work led to research in partnership with industry, to consultancy reports and to scientific articles.

Michel Grisoni graduated in agronomy and holds a PhD degree in Plant pathology from Montpellier SupAgro (France). He has been conducting a carreer as agro-virologist for CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development) since 1984 in Colombia, French Polynesia and Reunion Island. His research on vanilla focused primarilly on pests and diseases then moved towards the caracterization, preservation and development of genetic resources, in particular to improve the resistance of vanilla plants to diseases.

He is presently in charge of a research program on "Vanilla genetics and certification" in Reunion Island and curator of the Vanilla collection of the Center of Biological Resources (VATEL).

The Amazing Vanilla

When I chose this Vanilla book, I was looking for a way to make my own vanilla at home. To my astonishment this book took me to the beginning of the world of vanilla. It is very well written and extremely informative. How to make cooking vanilla was never discussed though.
